Champions Online: It Came From Beyond!

Because a day isn’t a day without a mention of good ‘ol Champions Online (motto: DC Universe Can Suck Eggs), they’ve posted a huge wrapup of links and info from the NYCC here. A few notes of interest from all of this, in case you’re time-limited:

  • It looks as though you’ll have to be a certain level before being able to create your nemesis.
  • You can choose your nemesis’ power group, but not specific powers.
  • Other players will be able to help you fight your nemesis, so they expect players to “show off” their nemesis creation skills here.
  • They keep repeating this phrase: “very action oriented”.
  • Champions the RPG has been out for 28 years and is heading into its sixth edition. There are over 200 Champions books to date, adding to its lore.
  • You have a choice to create a hybrid character or a more focused character, in terms of powers.
  • You can toggle between “utility roles” based on the combat and group composition.
  • Signature technology from some of the established heroes has gone into the making of Millennium City.
  • There’s huge amounts of scripting and dialogue for the world and its inhabitants.
  • Different areas are “themed” — scifi, horror, espionage, etc.
  • “Champions is like what City of Heroes would be if they were able to go back and start over again.”
  • “We just put 200 new weapons into the game and are always looking for more.”
  • No bases at launch.
  • They’re starting to work on vehicle technology, but no promises.
  • They made a demon superhero named Mr. Scorcho to show off some of the combat.
  • It’s been difficult from a design standpoint to create a “classless” game.
  • They’ll be pushing a lot more people into the closed beta over the next few months.
  • They’re very happy with how the game looks right now.
  • Play testers are being weirdly inventive when it comes to mix-and-matching powers and creating unique-looking characters.
  • They’ve intentionally stayed away from urban settings (a la City of Heroes)
  • The public quest system from Warhammer will see a version of it being used in Champions Online (yay).

I’m getting that feeling… you know, the one… when your tummy feels all a-quiver because “The Game” might be on the horizon and all your wildest dreams will come true. The one where you can’t stop smiling because you feel like a kid on December 24th and the anticipation is starting to build and thoughts of “The Game” are reeling through your head every 10 minutes.

Even as an MMO vet, even though I’ve been disappointed and let down and jaded, “the feeling” gets me every time.

I like the feeling… and even when I’m let down, I don’t fully regret buying into the hype. It’s fun to anticipate things.

  3. Is there going to be any PvP in this game or is it all PvE?

    Haven’t heard anything yet.

Yeah, I’m getting that feeling a bit about this and SW:ToR. Other than the character costumes I mentioned earlier, I’m getting stomach-knots for this.
