You know what’s one of the most-cited favorite memories from City of Heroes? Super jump. I hear it over and over and over again — “Super jump was the bomb, yo!” And despite their weakness for late 90′s lingo, I totally know where they’re coming from. (Word.)
Super jump (and to a lesser extent, CoH’s other travel powers) was an utterly liberating experience in a MMO. We’ve gotten used to hauling around avatars that have a vertical jump of two inches, a top running speed of 6 mph, and an unbeatable foe in steep cliff faces. Sure, we get “mounts” that up our travel speed some, but it still doesn’t give us that freedom of movement that I think we all subconsciously crave in video games.
Games aren’t supposed to mirror real life — they’re extensions of fantasy and flights of fancy that becomes a sort of surreal, super-life. If Mario was anything like a person would be, there’s no way he’d be able to jump that high, grow from vegetables, or tame dinosaurs and use them as transportation. It just would end badly. But we’ve learned since the beginning of games that it’s awesome to have characters who are given a more grand ability of movement than we will ever have. Hence why we got characters who could double-jump off of nothing in particular, fly, swing from vines, and do these ridiculous Hollywood-style action stunts that nobody aside from Gumby is flexible enough to do.
Which brings me back to super jump. When you got super jump, the world of CoH stopped being so limited. You had verticality as well as speed. The entire town became a giant platform-type game, where you could hop from rooftop to rooftop in search of your foes. It felt huge, epic, involving. And I’m desperately needing something like that in my other MMOs.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want super jump in, say, Lord of the Rings. Although that would be funny: “Whee!” said Frodo as he leapt over Sauron to slam-dunk the one ring in Mt. Doom. But the other day I had a great moment where I jumped off a ledge, hit my shout attack on the way down, and landed on top of a bad guy. That’s the sort of thing I crave — to be able to do a few epic moves from time to time. Scale walls with a fleetness of foot that some heroes possess. Have a move where your character automatically ducks an incoming attack and uses that motion to launch a counter-attack of their own. Doing a flip jump into a pool of water. Anything.
I hate it when I feel limited in movement in MMOs. It was particularly bad in Guild Wars, where your feet were nailed to the ground, you couldn’t go up or down many hills, and invisible walls blocked you at every turn. But other MMOs carry with them some bad habits of immobility, including the classic “let’s make you stand in one place to cast a spell over a few seconds”. Because that’s immersion — standing stock still.
I know it seems like a trivial thing to devote resources toward, but I’d really love to see more freedom of movement within MMO environments as time goes on. Let us be able to climb, if we can’t run up things. Let my guy do a sliding skid down a tree trunk. Let me be able to escape a pack of wolves by throwing up a grappling hook and scampering up to freedom. Give me all the tricks of those free runners you see in movies like Casino Royale. That’d be sweet.
A bio movement? Sick Syp.
I do agree though, movement should be fun in a game, not tedious. Seems like an almost free way to add fun to your game.
That would be awesome. It certainly fits with classes like WoW Rogues, or WARs Shadow Warriors. I’d play those classes just for the jumping fun. No question!
I just finished the CoH trial, and even though I got bored with the combat around level 8, I pressed on to 14 just so I could try out super jump. It was pretty much the Best Thing Ever.
Flying is technically more powerful, but it feels too boring and too safe. I refuse to play any MMO that doesn’t let me recklessly hurl myself into the air. Super jumping could definitely have a place in TOR, with the Force users and jet-pack-wielding bounty hunters.
Movement is huge to me, I think that’s why I’ve been loving Mirror’s Edge so much over the weekend. Probably what attracted me to the Shadow Warrior in WAR so much, the super-agile, rooftop-running archer in the trailer was too much for me to resist (of course, we all know how that turned out).
Good post!
Your desire for wider movement, special moves, special attacks sounds eerily like playing a console game. I’ve gathered that there’s a line between consolers and PC-gamers with the consolers being looked down upon. (Some do this, not all, and I’m surely not saying you do.) I play a lot of consoles and PC games so I’d welcome this. However this type of movement you suggest is easier with a gamepad of some sort versus a keyboard, in my opinion.
Freedom of movement in any game is awesome. I think that’s why I love playing Crackdown and Assassin’s Creed so much. Jumping from building to building or climbing on anything is liberating. Like you I wouldn’t want this overdone and definitely implemented within reason. It does frustrate me how my toon can run up certain surfaces but can’t lean forward and climb certain others. Or what about jumping up and grabbing something to lift up onto?
Perhaps this will be a new innovation in the future of MMOs. If it’s done right it could be really cool.
Hells yes. The movement powers in CoH were the best thing about an otherwise-good game.
The movement in CoH was inarguably spectacular and a source of great enjoyment in and of itself. I loved all the travel powers in different ways, and look forward to CO and DCUO for my next movement fix. You’re right though, it’d be a good move to incorporate better movement (as well as combat that takes actual advantage of terrain) in every MMO. It’s just more fun when you have greater freedom of movement.
Off topic, but have you seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NPZkgK-TkY&fmt=22 (No need to approve, just thought you’ld enjoy it).
@Krosuss:
Check out inFamous (PS3) or Prototype (360/PS3, I think). Both seem to give you the super powered hero that can leap over anything.
I had a great time with Crackdown last year. It was really fun having a buddy join in and just go leaping around town crashing into bad guys.
I think you’ll love Aion then, Syp. Don’t know a huge amount about it but you can fly – it’s apparently one of the big draws of the game.
If you like the free aspect stuff, check out Infamous on the PS3. Just a single player game but the movement is nicely implemented.
Hmm… I’d never really thought about it, but I think you’re right. More movement in MMOs would be awesome. Assassin’s Creed was a blast because of the amount of freedom of movement. I loved being able to levitate around the map in Morrowind. And super jump in CoH was the shizz.
Maybe we’ll be able to force jump in SW: TOR!!
MMORPGs have always seemed to let players do almost super-human jumping feats. It’s ironic that single player games do the complete opposite. Here you are, a super powered gun toting killin’ machine, and you cannot jump over a three foot high crate.

I second inFamous on the PS3. The graphics are amazing, and while the character can’t super jump, he can certainly jump off the tallest building (which gives my stomach a rush everytime) and can climb up any building using the same tricks as the free runners (Parkour dudes). The movement really is a great feature of the game.
Haha!
This post totally reminded me of one of the late changes to druids (instantaneous shifting from one form to another without going humanoid in between) in WoW TBC.
XD
A very good friend of mine spent hours ‘dive-bombing’ things. Basically going from flight form (raven flying up into the air), instantaneously changing into a bear, and using a skill called ‘feral charge’ to… land safely on the ground without damage, by charging at a target on the ground.
It’s actually more complicated than it sounds, because if you don’t gauge the distance correctly, you can’t charge, and you can hit the ground and take damage before you’re able to get the right distance.
>.> That was so funny though. =)
But now I am curious about CoH. Just for the jumping. O.o
I loooooove my oldskool wuxia movies (think 20ish years ago or so) and to be able to poing everywhere like a wuxia hero… CoH… looking… more… appealing…
I wrote a bit about this before on my blog a while ago (http://www.psychochild.org/?p=240).
The consensus was that the neat thing about movement powers was the sense of freedom you get. The ability to take a leap over that cliff to see where it leads, instead of slowly climbing down the “safe” way. CoH’s Super Jump still stands out to me, as does EQ2′s fae races. It’s fun to go places other people can’t and take the shortest route you can see down a cliff. That’s why I think these types of powers are so appealing.
I second the EQ2 Fae race for fun movement. The racial “safe fall” and “gliding” powers combine for some really nice movement options. Add in some movement buffs (e.g. Fury) and you can travel extraordinary distances by leaping off high places. Good times.
