What would he suggest for an alternative?
I seem to recall an MMO a while back which wasn’t all about the egos of the designers. It was a pretty wide-open world. Ultima something-or-other…
As I recall, people hated it. With pretty much the sole exception of EVE Online, every MMO since has put players into tighter and tighter restrictions on how they can interact with each other, while funneling them more towards dev-designed content.
The genre is what the players have made it, not what the devs made it.
To an extent, I agree. I think that is why I prefer sandbox end-games like Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies to predetermined tiers like World of Warcraft. They at least give the perspective of more freedom, even if they’re equally as limiting in other ways.
