DDO: New Territory
Believe it or not, but at one point in DDO’s history — shortly after launch, in fact — they had upwards of 15 servers.
These had long since been condensed into the five we have today, but apparently Turbine is prepared to roll out a brand-new server for their DDO:EU launch on September 1st.
It’s a good sign of their faith in the future of the game and the popularity of the free to play program. Very rarely do you see a MMO add new servers after having condensed them, but I suppose this is a special case.
Anyway, my subscription to DDO doesn’t run out until September 15, which means I’m a VIP player until then and thus eligable for the early start into the new content. I’m most looking forward to poking around in the DDO store and deciding how I want to set up my free to play account with goodies when the 15th rolls around.

They mention VIP players getting in first, then Head Start players getting in next, then finally the free-to-play launch.
Any clue what a Head Start player is?
Or not!

HEy Syp just read this today:

dunno what this’ll mean for the future of DDO:EU
DDO: EU sounds like fun. I never really investigated DDO but I am interested in their free to play version. Can’t wait to see your thoughts on it.
Look I stopped messing up my name from Scaeybooster. I am now correctly representd as Scarybooster.com. I fat finger letters sometimes
Well crap….. two people beat me to the link.

Boooooooooooooooooo
Syp, how about a beginner’s guide to DDO Unlimited version?
I would like to try DDO Unlimited, but DDO Europe stays with the pay to play model for now, unfortunately.
Turbine vs Atari huh? Sounds messy :-\
I only hope if Turbine wins – and I believe that they should, if what they claim is true – that Champions Online doesn’t suffer as a result.
As far as DDO:EU is concerned, it’s a real shame they’re releasing when they are. I would have been interested in trying out the new stuff, but I’ll likely be too busy with CO now.
@ Longasc – I’ve done a couple DDO newbie-type guides/lists — just do a back search of the DDO posts (under the catagory drop down menu) to find them.
Great to see growth in a MMO but I wonder will this new server Cannith become the defacto Free to Play server. I been reading the forums and there seems to be alot of players (or just a vocal minority) who see DDO going F2P as a bad thing, like F2P players are not as good as them.
