Torchwood… dang it, TorchLIGHT. Why do I keep doing that?
No matter. Just came to my attention that we should all be following the development of Torchlight at Runic Games’ site — this title looks very, very promising. Particularly the recently-announced class, the Vanquisher:
“At E3 this Summer, we hinted around at our 3rd class. “She’s female,” is all we could confirm. Then little leaks came out – She’ll be a mixed-range class. Guns and bows. Badass babe stuff. You’ve been waiting … and we’ve been waiting to show you.
Girls of Gaming was her official debut, and what better way for a fine and classy young avatar to meet her public than with a smoking gun and a smirk on page 4. We also revealed that the third class –who you now know as The Vanquisher—had a backstory rooted in the overall world, even beyond the boomtown of Torchlight. She travels to Torchlight in disguise as a fellow treasure and adventure seeker. Secretly, however, she is a member of the elite and deadly guards of the world’s capital city, sent to investigate the mysterious and violent disturbances surrounding the boomtown’s Ember mines.
She has a nasty road of corrupted Ember and death ahead of her, but our girl is up to the task. Please meet the long-awaited Vanquisher.”

Is this the one from some of the folks that was working on Mythos before Flagship went belly up?
There’s *some game* from those people and I’m really looking forward to it.
I hope we get a full 4th season of Torchwood, too.
It’s a shame that we can’t do a study to show how little the success of an MMO depends on the cleavage of its female avatars. Then maybe developers and concept artists would give them less ridiculous outfits.
People with internet connections and a hankering for attractive women can find what they want for a lot less than $15 a month. It’s not really a market MMOs stand a chance at breaking into.
Torchlight looks very promosing indeed although I disappointed to hear that the MMO component of it had been shelved for a couple of years. They plan on bringing out a single player version and then turning into a MMO later. Sounds like an interesting strategy but I’m worried that the MMO side will just never appear.
And Torchwood is overrated
Doctor Who is way better!
@Pete S: Same game, single player first then MMO later.
@WalterD: The game doesn’t have monthly fees; the single-player is a one shot buy and the later MMO is a microtransaction model. If you’re going to slap at someone for making sweeping generalizations, shouldn’t you NOT do the same?
@We Fly Spitfires : they have funding for the MMO tru Perfect World….so there is almost no chance for a cancellation…I am pretty confident ! They’ll use the same base, engine and tools (probably modified) for the MMO…so the work on the single player will be re-used !
@ Facepalm: Point taken. My comment wasn’t a dig at Torchlight specifically but more at the trend of featuring slutty women in MMOs.
I guess I just find it a little disappointing when the text says “treasure and adventure seeker… member of the elite and deadly guards”, but the picture says “model at a Halloween party”.
The fact of the matter is that players — even female players — want their character to look attractive. No one wants their avatar to wear a burlap sack. Now the Vanquisher shown here is showing a little more skin than would be “realistic” but hey, that’s just the language of fantasy art.
Anyway, I’ve been following this game for a while, and I’m looking forward to more info coming out this week at PAX.
