Thursday Afternoon Confidential
Interesting enough to mention, not long enough to warrant their own article:
Whoever is designing the starships for Star Trek Online has my admiration — ships like this look so much cooler than anything I saw in the shows or movies. Can’t wait to captain the U.S.S. Syp!
The title of this article over at Darth Hater made me snarf a couple times.
I know DDO is all happy about its new store and everything, but they’re getting downright spammy with constant “sales” popping up on the site and in my Google Reader feeds like this one. I think it’s something about Turbine in general that they can’t let a week go by without trumpeting some big special or whatnot, even at the risk of overexposure and reader apathy.
Okay, so, Fallen Earth’s ugly females got a bit less ugly – perhaps Glamor Shots reopened in the Grand Canyon or something. I don’t know. It’s interesting — and hypocritically hilarious — to hear them talk about how “Fallen Earth has never been about the sexiness of its females” while they release promotional wallpaper and box art that’s all about the sexiness of its females.

Without addressing the overall point of the ship design, you do realize that’s almost identical to the Intrepid class (Voyager), right? About the only thing that seems different is the big blue whatever-it-is on the top of the primary hull, and the “wings” coming off opposite the nacelles. There’s certainly some detail changes, but the overall form is pretty much the same.
So the FE girls got their heads shrunk a bit? It’s an improvement for sure, but the before/after pictures look really weird next to each other…
That, and how often are players looking at their avatar’s face anyway?
Bring on the STO!
Ignoring the sale announcements is a relatively small price to pay for no monthly fee. I think the bigger danger from the publisher’s perspective is that people will hold off on purchases for the next sale. It’s good for them if a sale drives lots of purchases (it’s not like they’re actually losing money on manufacturing costs), but bad if they create the impression that it’s not worth paying full price. People who wander off while waiting might not come back.
One of the things I looked forward to most in Star Wars Galaxies was owning my own ship. I didn’t want a Firespray or a YT-1300. I just wanted something that I could call mine in a universe I loved. Then Jump to Lightspeed sucked, and my X-Wing and my Kuat Yacht sucked it up.
I hope STO makes it a lot more interesting and involving to actually pilot the ships. I do like that picture, too. I don’t want an Enterprise. Voyager or less would be fine by me. Just give me a place to call my own.
The newer Star Trek ships have always looked pretty cool. The Defiant looked awesome as does the Enterprise-E. The older stuff does look rubbish though
Argh!! Heresy!!
The refit Constitution (movie Enterprise) is a classic… I don’t care for most of the early Next Generation designs (including the Galaxy) but most of the later designs got back to good styling. The Akira and Steamrunner especially highlighted the new design trend from about First Contact on, and were spectacular.
Mmm… so much goodness… 2009 was a great year for MMOs and 2010 looks to be even better.
) – but the slower pace of the game really sits well, plus, playing Air Guitar with your weapons out is the best thing ever
Fallen Earth has kinda suckered me in, even though I’ve spent the last two days getting to level 4 (Servers keep going down about 7pm BST, so I quit out and go play some Champions
I’ve never been much of a trekkie, I’m initiated enough to know the difference between a Romulan and a Cardassian, but not enough to care what colour their blood is. STO’s looking to be quite interesting, but I’m worried that the social aspect of the game will be nullified by hard-core trekkies thumbing their noses and poohpoohing it’s plot holes constantly. That’s ONE MMO forum I won’t be visiting regularly…
