Fallen Earth: The Gunslinger

gunslingerMy character in Fallen Earth, Syp, is a Tech pistoleer, and as such, I’m diligently working on ballistics and geology as two of my main tradeskills.  Fallen Earth starts ranged weapon users out with kind of pathetic versions of what they’ll eventually achieve — rifle users get crossbows, and pistoleers get zip guns (modified paint guns).  While I can throw out decent dps with my dual zip guns, the weak *pfft-pfft-pfft* of the gas-powered weapons just don’t convey the weight of a real gunslinger.

So I really, really can’t wait until I obtain a pair of revolvers, the next step up the pistol chain.  Having recently traveled to Oilville, I saw these guns available for purchase in the store — for a whopping 1900 chips apiece.  I only have 3900 chips total, a decent amount for the early game, but buying these guns (nevermind ammo that I can’t craft yet and would have to purchase) would just about wipe me out.

Because of that, I’m going to have to swallow my impulsive instant gratification and wait a bit until I can craft myself a pair, a la Roland, Eddie and Suzie (and Jake).  On that day, I too will become a true gunslinger.

  1. The rather stiff animations in videos are really making it difficult for my gf and other friends to gain interest in Fallen Earth.

I’m wondering, is there a way to stay in first-person perspective in order to avoid staring at your own clunky character in the middle of your screen?

Also, and this relates to your character a bit more, what are the other options aside from guns? I haven’t seen much in the way of melee descriptions or other (if any? mutated spellcasting) abilities.

I’m hearing that one faction is overly popular, mostly from support for guns? (not sure if that’s true or not)

  2. @ Rog – I don’t find the animations that distracting in game. Some are blah, some are quite good (such as getting on and off a horse). But that’s a matter of personal taste. You can stay in first person mode, I guess, but that cuts down your side vision for combat.

The main combat options are melee (two handed, or dual wielding one-handers), dual-wielding pistols, or rifles. Each have pros and cons — rife has great damage but sucks at short range, melee never runs out of “ammo”, pistols are jack of all trades. I’m seeing a lot of rifle users, but all three are viable.

Spellcasting is called mutations, and all characters get them. Depending on your focus, you do specialize once you get to sector 2, but so far in sector 1 my mutations are mostly just buffing/healing. They do get offensive, but I have no idea if you can use them as your primary combat mode.

  3. There is a very nice quest reward pistol in zanesville, I can’t recall the quest givers name, but he is standing near the target range and asks you shoot some targets with a zip gun for the open quest. Might help you acquire those dual pistola earlier.

  4. “They do get offensive, but I have no idea if you can use them as your primary combat mode.”

The developers have stated that mutations are not meant to be used by themselves, but rather compliment and support your main fighting style, be that rifles, pistols or melee.

Also, it is highly recommended that you hold off on using handguns until Sector 2, as they go through ammo like crazy and will quickly bankrupt you trying to keep them loaded. Zip guns are much more efficient in Sector 1 as the ammo is easy to craft, there are many quests that reward that ammo type and the dps they put out is sufficient for anything you may come across (except perhaps pvp).

  5. Are there Lobstrosities in this game? That would be swell. I always thought the Gunslinger could translate into an awesome game or TV series (cable though, cuz its gotta be bloody). I’m really getting the itch to check FE out though…

  6. My dude (covered in cobwebs though he may be) uses a crossbow (considered a rifle) at range and the whack’s up upside the head with a closet rod (2 handed melee). Basically a big stick.

I love the deadpan humor in the game. Like there’s a crafting skill of “Sporting goods” that’ll let you craft a golf club…which you then use to beat the heck out of your enemies.

Admittedly graphics are hardly state of the art, which is a major part of why I was so hesitant to recommend the game when I first started playing. That and a general level of un-polish.

Glad to see it’s getting some traction, though!

  7. What is the payment model for Fallen Earth? Is it a buy the game and then pay us money per month or is it a microtransactions F2P model?

If the client’s free, I might go for it. Otherwise, it’ll be a while.

But I really, really, really want to give this a shot as post-apocalyptic worlds are kind of my bread and butter, dream of dreams. Not really sure why, but I prefer them over hardcore sci-fi and fantasy worlds. I love just walking down my street at night because it’s so desolate and alone and makes me think I’m kind of there. Morbid and kind of odd, yeah, but hey, whatever.

  8. It’s $50 for the game, and $15/month after the first month. I do think they need to drop the price tag somewhat, but hey, I’m getting my money’s worth.

  9. “You’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya punk?”

“Hmmm, what am I talking to a zombie for?”

    *pfft-pfft-pfft*

  10. I’ve been having alot of fun with this, I’ve gone for a pure melee/crafter character (to take advantage of my Steam shirt :D ) – I’ve been happilly battering people with a baseball bat for 10 levels now and I don’t think I’ll go back. I don’t even need a ranged weapon, I just bodypull, open with a stun, head smack, body smack, dead man. Only problem is if there’s alot of lag (which there can be), I just can’t get the hits in.
The main pull for me is the crafting. Not being forced into the world, being able to buy all your mats (or just the ones you’re short on) is an excellent addition (atleast at lower levels) – Cooking is the easiest skill to increase (I’ve made around 1000 grilled chickens, nom nom) as everything drops cookable items (Get Brewing and you can make some excellent stamina regen buffs out of fruit)

  11. Fallen Earth slipped under my radar – the fallout games are some of my favourites and with no fallout MMO on the horizon i may check this out.

Are there many people playing it, playing Lotr at the moment and apart from when i play with members of my Kinship it feels quite sparsely populated like Vanilla WoW content really.

  12. Just got this game, partly based on the great blog posts here… I’m level 4 and loving it so far. It’s great to find a game that DOESN’T hold your hand and coddle you like a little baby, but lets you find your own way in the wasteland.

My character is Abraham Huxley – you’ll find him slaying goats and coyotes by duel-wielding a baseball bat and a corkscrew. Now what other game lets you do that?

  13. I plan on getting this game over the weekend (especially after hearing you rave about it), and it looks like I’ll be making the exact same build ><

    Here's my thought process:
–Crafting all the way. (max Intelligence and Perception)
–First Aid uses Intelligence and Perception. (max First Aid)
–Faction that offers gun/rifle skills and lots of crafting with some exclusives. (Tech or Vistas)
–Tech offers First Aid (woohoo), Geology (exclusive, probably less combat-intensive than Nature), and Pistols (which come in handy if something sneaks up on me while I'm gathering). Plus I'm pro-tech in general :)

  14. I love this game. I played in early beta, and hated it. But I bought it anyway right after it came up on steam and holy crapolas is it the most fun I’ve ever had in an MMO.
