Looking At The Star Trek Online Box Art

Box art fascinates me, much in the same way that movie posters do.  They tell a story, highlight their selling points, and in many cases, feature copious amounts of cleavage.  So what does Cryptic’s Star Trek Online box art tell us?

  • Overall?  It’s a snazzy piece of art, and I like it a lot.  I think this is the sort of look that will help draw attention to the box on the shelf amid fantasy MMOs.
  • You have a bit of different generations going on here — the classic Star Trek font, an updated version of the Enterprise model, a Next Generation/Voyager/DS9 outfit, and even a hint of more futuristic technology, such as the funky banana phaser there.
  • The box is framed in the Starfleet icon, which, along with the white in the dead space, helps to recall back to last summer’s Star Trek film (which also used the same font for their promotion, by the way).
  • As Ardua said, they’re heavily promoting the combat, make no mistake about it.
  • The Klingons are obviously shoved into the background, but they’re still there.  I kind of feel like the bottom right is giving me more of a Lord of the Rings/fantasy feel.

P.S. – If combat’s what you’re looking for, the ship combat looks pretty dang spiffy.

  1. It looks pretty good. I’m especially glad that they aren’t using cleavage and miniskirts to sell it. Kirking might be a tradition in the ST universe, but I’ve always thought it to be a weak point. (And let’s not even get started on Seven of Nine or T’Pol. Bleh.)

  3. The combat looks excellent but is it just me or do the ships seem … wrong. The nacelles especially. It just looks stretched. There’s an Andorian! Ahem sorry.

Its very interesting when they talk about your crew. Its very EVE esque with the Electronic counter measures and whatnot but with a very star trekky feel to it.

Combat looks hectic, gotta love that.

  4. Beautiful. Very pretty (I was hoping for more of a Homeworld-esque feel, but this will do nicely anyway).

The interface looks waaaay too busy though. Not just for combat, though. The interior parts were the same. That’s gonna put some people off.

Way too many buttons and scrollbars. And also…

    *sacrilege warning*
    …LCARS is really a terrible interface anyway…
    *end sacrilege*

  5. I just watched the space combat movie, and that they apply the holy trinity of tank, dps and healer to space ships really put me off. It is looking good, but this feels so wrong. Space combat would have been a chance to get away from the not really that supreme standard procedure of MMO combat.

  6. It’s an interesting cover. Very different from what I was expecting as it’s a lot more action orientated and a lot less “Star Trek”. I guess they are really trying hard to attract attention with it and invoke some exciting emotions.

  7. Nicely done!

P.S. Whatever you do, do not analyze any EverQuest cover lest hordes of fan boys and girls come emerge from their dingy basements and attack you.
