No Battle Plan Survives First Contact With The Enemy
Yesterday was… whew. You ever have one of those intensely draining days where you simply can’t do enough work to dig yourself out of the pile of work that you have? That was yesterday. I’m getting ready to take a couple dozen teens on a winter retreat this weekend, which means a mountain of planning and materials-gathering (hey, like a quest!), which is why I went from my typical 20 posts a day to, y’know, 2.
This is all to say that when I got home at 8:30 last night, I was just drained. Pooped. I spent a bit of time with my rapidly-falling asleep family, then logged on for what I had hoped to be a stress-relieving evening of gaming.
I quickly logged into WoW to do my daily heroic, after which I planned to get down and dirty with LOTRO in Evendim. Skirmishes, man, those are addicting.
But as I’m in the middle of my heroic, I get about six tells from various members of the guild. Apparently, it was a raid night and they needed a healer to step in to ICC. I almost, almost said “No”, but I have this thing about not letting people down, and besides, I was curious what ICC actually looked like.
So Echoes the newb trundles into one of the harder raids of the game, all the while channeling my inner Star Wars nerd and muttering “I have a bad feeling about this…”
It wasn’t too, too bad. I mean, I had no idea what I was doing as they were feeding me instructions on the go, but we actually managed to down the first three bosses in a couple hours before calling it a night, and I enjoyed being both a healer and a spellcaster (thank you dual specs!) depending on the fight.
But the funniest moment came after our third boss when we were all patting ourselves on the back, knowing that we were all generally undergeared for the instance, and I admitted that I still was wearing a couple greens. Trinkets, but still — greens. It then became a “Well, if ECHOES can do this, ANYone can!” running joke.
I’m the baseline for being barely adequate! Woot!

Yep, I had one of those weeks myself and next week is going to be just as bad. Work sucks eh?
It makes raiding worthwhile when your mates misstreat you
