Where Would You Live… Online?
So say that you had to enter the Witness Protection Program because you saw what Tipa and Werit are building in their secret lair, and technology being what it is today, the feds inform you that they’re able to relocate you and your family to a home in one of them fancy-pantsy MMORPGs. Assuming that dangerous roaming mobs and threat levels weren’t an issue, what zone would you pick?
I have a few that would make great virtual homes:
- LOTRO – The Shire: Okay, okay, everyone would say the Shire, but really — how could I not? Short fat people, pie, lots of parties, more pie, pastoral landscapes and pie to die for? I’m in. Besides, those little Hobbit homes look really cozy.
- WoW – Mulgore: Mulgore might not be a terrific zone for questing, but it’s always reminded me of one of my favorite places: Colorado. Lots of space, mountains in the distance, plateaus, tents… yeah, I could camp there for a while.
- WAR – Inevitable City: Since this whole world is pretty much one giant battlefield, I might as well go for the gusto and set up shop in the craziest bizarro place in it. There’s always something to see and do in the IC!
- Fallen Earth – Depot 66: Three words: Dinosaur Amusement Park.
- City of Heroes – Talos Island: Talos kind of has it all — stores, beaches, the ocean, rapid transit, huge statues everywhere.

Stranglethorn just to gank the noobs and hang out with all the shroom eating trolls Mon.
IC was AWESOME!
Other place I would live is probably the Undercity in WoW, just a dingy dungeon, but cool place.
Somewhere in LoTRO to be sure. It has the best scenic vistas, but more importantly is one of the few games with a solid infrastructure in place, it’s one of the few that feels like a living world.
I wouldn’t want to live in WoW with it’s blocky graphics and lack of housing and agriculture. I think there are also only 2 or 3 bathrooms in the entire world.
CoH has good public transit and lots of housing, but have you ever seen anyone selling food? Sure there are restaurants, but the doors don’t work! I went to a market in faultline, but they didn’t have any food either :p
WAR. WAR never changes . . . wait . . . wrong game.
Fallen Earth has an extreme lack of water, trees, grass, houses, roads, food, and luxury items. I’m not much for roughing it, and I think Fallen Earth is as rough as it gets.
Are we assuming we’re immortal, too? It would stink to live in Mulgore but be a wee bit clumsy on a rope bridge.
I do love Thunder Bluff and Mulgore, though.
The Shire. No question, that’s the most pleasant place I’ve ever visited in a virtual world. The people are nice, the food is great, and the countryside is serene and placid, and largely devoid of threats (for an MMO anyhow). Plus the taverns are uniformly excellent. Last but not least, you can get rather a lot of experience and cash just by walking around and talking to people, plus delivering pies and mail.
Depot 66 also has daily performances of Hamlet and Julius Caesar
EvE online: Wormhole Space in Covert Ops frigate or Cloaking recon, good luck finding me, lol.
SWG: Jabba’s Palace…..because its awesome!
My LOTRO house is in fact in the Shire.
Hmmm…
WoW: Teldrassil. It’s nice and cool and shady, has great music, and you’ll never go thirsty there. The runner-up would be Grizzly Hills… love the trees, mountains, and overall lumberjack feel.
LotRO: The Shire, for sure. The hobbiteses throw the best parties, and they have PIE!
CoH: Perez Park. Because a neighborhood with Circle of Thorns and a hydra monster would rock, and people would never be able to track me down.
Silvermoon. Any place that has an enchanted broom to do the chores is a win.
I was going to say either of the Allods starting cities bit I don’t think I could afford it.
WoW: Swamp of Sorrows, Sholazar Basin or Silverpine Forest. Gotta love the atmosphere.
Eve: Rens. In rust we trust, but I need the hustle of a market hub around me.
GW2: The Black Citadel. See above. I have a soft spot for industrial design.
WoW -> The Undercity-It’s just too cool – oooo but the enchanted brooms are a super close second (Silvermoon)!
LotRO -> Still like the Dwarves cave homes, those were pretty sweet, but really anywhere in LotRO wouldn’t bug me it’s so pretty there
Fallen Earth -> that mesa top in zone one, awesome view
Probably Oggok in the original Everquest. I’m an Ogre at heart.
WoW -> Ironforge, Dalaran, or Teldrassil
LoTRO -> like you, i never got past North Downs, but i’d say pretty much anywhere given how it looked.
EVE -> Jita or Rens. Amarr Prime if necessary, there’s a Dreadnought docked there, one of only 2-3 in highsecurity space.
WAR -> whatever the orc/goblin starting zone was, or Mt Gunbad
I’d pick Undercity in WoW, save for those nasty toxins floating all around. Breathing them in can’t be healthy… for the living. Darnassus is a nice, sleepy town, but it could just be too sleepy. Ironforge is awesome, but I’d imagine it would be either too chilly in the outer ring, or way too hot in the inner. Maybe the gnomes have created a nifty climate regulator system by now? LOL.
Kelethin in EQ is such an awesome starting city… a city in the trees is pretty damn cool. And given the Plane of Knowledge stone and Nexus platform nearby, commuting to *anywhere* on Norrath would be a breeze!
LOTRO: Rivendell, or may be Lothlorien (although those crazy tree houses etc make your head spin). If you haven’t been there, just google it.
GW: I always loved Vabbi. Garden of Seborhin, Kodash Bazaar.
I absolutely loved Troll Country in WAR. I thought the Oak trees and the grayish skies were simply beautiful.
Sure there are trolls in the woods and farms are plagued with taint and undeath, but hey, that’s entertainment as far as I’m concerned!!
