- Chris looks down on MMOs made from books
Hey Syp,
Thanks for the link back. It’s not that I look down on MMOs made from books, it’s that I think they can’t achieve the same sense of world and narrative that they try to live up to. I also think it’s more likely for developers to find themselves unnecessarily limited in what they can design.
Take LotRO for example. It’s a great game and definitely my favorite MMO. But, they’re limited by what was and wasn’t included in Tolkien’s literature, which is a common excuse for the emphasis on fighting wildlife for the first 30 levels or so.
An MMO made from a book is not necessarily a bad or lackluster game by an means. But, it almost always will involve sacrifice to preserve either the lore or the game play.
That being said, I love the added depth LotRO adds to the readings of the books and the sense of awe when I come across somewhere I’ve recently read about. That’s something a non-book-related MMO couldn’t simulate. In the end, it’s a trade off.
Good luck with the new baby!|
