Bio Break

TOR: The Merlin Principle

Maybe I’m the last person to realize this, but today while I was watching the new TOR timeline video (always good stuff), I noticed that the videos are being released backwards.  As in, the first video released was dated “0 ATC” (After the Treaty of Coruscant), and subsequent videos have traveled farther and father back in the timeline.  So instead of going from oldest record to newest, we’re doing the opposite.

This makes me wonder why BioWare is taking this approach, since all of these records have a cause-and-effect thing going on in them, except that they show the “effect” first and the “cause” second.  The records go back to 32,800 BTC, although we can’t see anything older than 103 BTC at the moment.  You can, however, see the date and the summary of the upcoming holorecords by clicking on the older dates — the next one, 303 BTC, seems like it’s going to deal with the events of KOTOR 1.

Just a couple quick thoughts on all this.  One, I’m wondering if they’re withholding some pretty big revelations for the final holorecords released — the story “bombshells” that set everything into motion.  And two, we know that we’re due at least 12 more videos, which (most likely) will need to come out before the game’s launch.  So I think they’ve had a pretty good idea on when TOR was going to come out a long time before the 2011 announcement.

  1. the Starforge was created around 30k years before 0 atc, maybe closer to 27k and it did make an appearance in the latest timeline. so I’m gonna assume that may have something to do with it.

  2. Well, the devs have actually stated that the timelines won’t be finished before the game releases. However, they’ve also said that the frequency of the timelines will likely increase as we get closer to release.

I guess it makes sense to release them backwards in time then, since they wouldn’t have to “rush” them. The community manager on the forums also hinted that we might even start to see events continuing forward again once we reached the “beginning” of history, so there should be plenty more timelines to keep us entertained!

  3. Maybe they’re waiting to reveal something about how the Jedi were created?
