It’s 12:11am — Do You Know Where Your Combat Video Is?

I’d be remiss in my duties as a slavering BioWare/The Old Republic fanboy if I didn’t at least give the new combat video a mention before bed.

You’ve seen it, right?

I mean, anyone who’s anyone has seen it.

To me, this is probably the most exciting video they’ve put out since the “Deceived” trailer, and that’s saying something.  It may be that I’m just so relieved that they’re talking about something other than planets at this point — c’mon, BioWare, planets are spiffy, but I can only be so excited about spheres before falling into a coma — but seeing combat, and a LOT of combat, in motion just pumped me up for TOR.

That’s bad.  I had gotten comfy in my willful ignorance in an effort to stave off impatience.  Watching this, I can easily envision playing the game, and I’m pulled between all eight classes.  They look so sweet, and I bet everyone watching this video will pick out one or two combat skills (low level skills, as the devs note) that they liked best.  Me?  The Trooper unloading a blaster minigun on the enemies was amazing, as was the sticky bombs and the Agent’s orbital assault.

Really, the only downside in the video to me was one or two developers who honestly looked bored talking about it (frankly, not everybody has a good “TV voice”, and I understand it).  And then there was this guy:

Who both has the most awesome name ever and looks about 11 years old.  I’m not trying to be mean here, but I can’t be the only one who thought that.  Maybe BioWare’s tapped the deep reservoirs of grade school genius, I dunno.  But one thing is undeniable — William Wallace: Senior Game Designer would be an excellent MMO in its own right.

  1. I think Senior means Senior in high school in this case.

That video was just awesome. I definitely liked the BH, and Trooper the best, but I am sure 99% of the players will play Jedi’s. I refuse to play a jedi myself.

  4. +1 for William Wallace: Senior Game Designer

A potential problem that I’m seeing is the amount of CC flying around.

I don’t want anther silence-root-disarm-disable Mythic styled freezeframe game.

  5. I was blissfully ignorant of this …. until this morning.

When I saw the bounty hunter pull someone over, my first thought was, ‘Get over here!’.

Hmm. Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter, Smuggler. I think I would end up in one of those roles. Perhaps even a Storm Trooper.

  6. It’s sad, but I kinda have to agree. The first thought that crossed my mind when reading “William Wallace Senior Game Designer” was that this guy was about 50 years to early to qualify for senior anything.

And then my tired addled brain started wondering what a game studio (or any software shop for that matter) would be like if senior * meant what it means in real life.

Queues of senior game designers on their walkers yelling at the junior game designers to get off their lawns and get a real job formed as one possible scenario.

  7. I hate Mel Gibson…

Great vid. Might as well give up the pretence of not being caught up in the hype!

  9. I enjoyed the video and was pretty excited, until it was over and I remember 2011. There’s just no way to maintain any level of hype for 12 months, I have plenty of other games to play in the meantime.

  11. I just watched this video and googled the child genius William Wallace of BioWare. Incredible.
