Wesley Broke The Holodeck And Other Stories
It was an odd whim, but a whim I succumbed to nonetheless — yesterday I resubbed for another month of STO, downloaded the client and rolled a new character (a tactical Trill, if you must know). I know, sure, the game hasn’t suddenly become this incredibly deep experience, but I’ve been craving a bit of mindless space combat, plus I’m curious if the changes they’ve made since I left were noticeable or not.
I will say that the client seems to be running a lot more smoothly now, although whether this is due to a new computer or tweaks to the code, I have no idea. I was more impressed with the ability to set all ground and space weapons to auto-attack, one of those small things that make a big difference. It frees me up from jamming on the keyboard to taking a more tactical approach with specials and facing.
There’s also a difficulty setting for missions now, so I immediately bumped it up to the middle setting — advanced — and had a lot of fun dying on the ground and spending gobs of time trying to beat ships in space. I think that slider is probably best left alone until you have a ship and experienced crew that can handle the challenge. Still, nice that it’s there.
Other than that, nothing extremely revelatory — I enjoyed it, and I think I could use this as an occasional MMO relief pitcher for LOTRO, but nothing more. The STO dev team has some big plans for the next couple months, but from all I could tell, the addition of content and depth is still a primary concern among players.
