DDO: Mysterious Renewable Content

From a recent ZAM interview with DDO devs:

“I think one thing that players can look forward to from us is a new type of content being added to the game. It is a new type of content system that will play a bit differently and be designed to be repeatable. It will scale to a bunch of different levels and have some form of indirect and direct competition built into the system.”

There’s a lot of good preview stuff in this article (airships, guild leveling, half-orc race, possible druid class), but the above quote really got my thinker a-tickin’.  A new type of content that will play differently, be repeatable, scale to levels, and be competitive.  What could it be?

PvP may be one solution — it certainly is repeatable and competitive — but DDO doesn’t really do PvP well, or lend itself to large-scale PvP at all.  Tavern brawls are the beginning and end of PvP in the game, and they really aren’t that popular.

I’ve always liked a couple ideas for repeatable content.  The first would be what I call “parallel dungeons” — a dungeon that two groups run in parallel, not directly competing for mobs, but racing to the end for the big prize (perhaps along two wings that converge on a center boss room).  The second would be to have player-created dungeons (a la City of Heroes’ Mission Architect).  Both would fit the definition of the above quote, and both would be pretty fun additions to the game.

Any other thoughts?

  1. I would towards something more like the LOTRO Skirmish system. Add in some bit of PvP skirmish or ranking and you meet the description pretty well.

My paladin is prepared for this; he has super high kpm*.

  3. I would expect it to be a token system that awards badges based on level and difficulty that can be spent on loot or Points or something similar.

  4. I would think they perhaps would do something similar to the Challenge Missions in Guild Wars:

  5. I’m guessing we’ll see wider level ranges on content difficulty settings. They’re already doing mid-level + capped raid as settings on the same content, so I don’t see why making the range wider would be a problem.

  6. I think a competitive dungeon crawl would be a blast to play. Competition without direct PvP would be a good move for DDO.

I don’t play DDO but do play LotRO and this sounds very much like the way Turbine described Skirmishes when they came out. I would not be surprised if this was being implemented for DDO as well as they are both owned by Turbine it would be easy to put it in DDO as well.

All I want is for them to add completely customizable controls so I can play the darn thing! :(

They pushed back Druids, yet again! They either need to finish them, or accept the fact that their current engine can not do the Druid class justice and drop it. Stop stringing us along.
