“Thief, thief, thief! Baggins! We hates it, we hates it, we hates it for ever!”
This is undoubtedly the cry of many members of The Knights of Minas Tirith, a kinship on Landroval who suffered a particularly nasty robbery over the weekend.
The RP neighborhood of Wildore threw a fairly elaborate block party this past Saturday night, with fishing and dancing and even a kissing booth. During the event, the “mayor’s” house (a kinship hall) and several player houses left their chests unlocked so the party planners could coordinate items and whatnot. Apparently, a thief came through and wiped them all out, replacing the stolen items with coal. The kins are trying to hunt down the individual responsible, but so far, no luck.
In many MMOs, robbery like this is fairly commonplace, but you don’t hear about this sort of thing in LOTRO that often, especially on the RP server. It’s the kind of place where people really can leave their front doors unlocked and not worry about it, although as this event proved, it takes just one person to spoil the stew.
Stew Spoilers: Coming to TBC this fall.
Anyway, the fact that these kins were putting on a huge party requiring a lot of work and were repaid in a cruel fashion has gotten a lot of people rallying around the victimized parties. It is heartening to see folks offer to buy and replace the stolen goods, but that doesn’t take the sour taste away.

Now that’s real, old-school RP.
Sorry, but I have no pity for the people on the forums complaining about this. Perhaps it’s my years of playing role-playing MUDs, but thievery is a valid RP role.
Oh my gosh! That’s horrible!
Something similar (but on as large of a scale) happened during the spring festival too. One person collected all the spring scrolls and left them in their chest so that members of the community could take them and out and put them back in for the titles. Unfortunately, several of the rarer scrolls kept disappearing.
That sort of thing is horrible… however it’s definitely not typical of most of the community on Landroval.
Surely there is room for thieves in the role playing world? Leaving the coal behind at least indicates some sense of style.
I love it! Even left a calling card.
I fully encourage this kind of behaviour in MMOs – if you don’t cheat, hack or deal outside of the game then being some kind of ninja theif genious deserves kudos!
I’d love if this player holds true to the world and if tracked down and brought into a scenario where he/she is arrested and has assets seized, then the items will be returned.
Even better he/she could plead guilty but the spoils have been hidden or passed on – causing a mass RP investigation/quest.
Probably not going to go down like that though.
I’m betting this player’s spent at least a few months with EVE Online
Agreed with mbp and Landeyda; if they didn’t plan it properly, tough shit. Especially since it’s an RP server, and a character class is, you know, a Burglar, it actually fits in rather well. Obviously I do kind of sympathise with them, but a hand burned is a lesson learned ^^.
I’m surprised the game even HAS a theft mechanic.
I’d expect it in EVE, of course, but in the no-pvp-unless-you-play-as-a-monster LotRO? Never would expect that.
I guess the biggest problem isn’t the role that’s being played, but the fact that the system really doesn’t have any mechanics to stop it. That’s where the sense of victimization settles in and why it isn’t kosher to pull off something that amazing.

The conclusion was awesome. Now the heat is on the supporters to chill out and let RP be RP, then lock chests more often. The worst thing that can happen at this point is if the players on the Knights’ side remain vindictive towards the amazing Burglar RP.
Seems perfectly fine and incredibly hilarious.
A game that has a burglar class… and someone gets burgled, mind boggling!
The fact that they left coal is probably the funniest part, possible implications that someone in the alliance/on the server was naughty and ‘deserved’ it?
