Pet Peeve of the Day
Yup, a new “of the Day” category!
Today’s MMO pet peeve is that in every game, no matter what level I am or what I’ve done before, I’m constantly asked to prove my worth and earn the trust of every new group I come across. Seriously, guys, you haven’t heard of me? I killed 4,000 dragons last week! You all have been sitting on your butts since launch — wait a minute, you should be trying to level up reputation with ME instead!
It’s kind of like you’re always pledging a frat, but never truly accepted.

NPC: Please don’t forget that I am glued to this spot. The only information I get is from passing heroes asking about rewards. I’ve got a pile of scrolls that I give out to jokers I tell to kill 10 woozles. Strangely I never see them again. So yes, you will need to prove your reputation if you want a scroll. Now go kill 10 woozles!
This is one reason I like WoW’s idea of just wearing a tabard while you do your normal questing to earn rep with them. You can play the game the way you’d normally would, but not have to jump through three trillion quests like in LOTRO. Though I prefer LOTRO’s quests to other games systems where all your stuck is collecting certain rare drops to get rep – yuck!
Blizzard did that right at the start of Wrath with everyone greeting you as a hero when you arrived in Northrend. Then all of the sudden I’m being told to fetch horses to a bloody squire. No way. The only quest in Grizzly Hills I boycotted. Screw you, squire Percy. I’m a gorram legendary hero, do your own job.
Agreed with Gantoris, the tabard-system was great.
Not only that but it certain games no matter what race you play you are always an “outside” even if you are one of those races going through a story and the mythical place is actually your races hometown and you couldn’t have come from anywhere else!
As long as people keep placing loot above friendship and exp above camaraderie you’re going to have to constantly prove that you won’t reduce their gains from maximum efficiency.
I’m more impressed with how tolerant the neutral factions of WOW are of me killing their members. The Golkar (sp?) centaurs of Desolace are described as blood-thirsty but they were down right permissive of my attempt to slaughter every one in sight. As I recall, it took killing about 60 of them before they decided I was their “enemy.” No wonder they never evolved their own starter area . . .
I’m into pet peeves and pet hates too – big time! If you’re interested, you might check out my cartoon blog at http://www.cartoonsbysheila.wordpress.com
