Quote of the Day

“Thing is, we all know the community in WoW sucks. It’s awful. It’s dreadful. It’s disease on the face on the virtual planet that needs to be wiped out by some sort of manners and etiquette learning virus.”

  1. Ya Id agree. People will argue that this isn’t the case I am sure. I believe there are good communities within WoW, but on the whole it is far worse than other games out there. I read a post awhile back by someone (can’t remember where) that said it was ridiculous to judge WoW’s community as a whole because of how many micro communities exist. I agree that you can make your own community in the game and step it up to higher standards. Truth is you still have a lot of people in trade chat bringing it down regardless of how great your guild atmosphere is.

  2. Creepy. I wrote a post this morning about this very thing.

I seriously wonder sometimes how WoW’s trade chat and forums got so far into lowest common denominator territory. I know a lot of people who started out using those forms of communication, but due to the abuse of trolls, they stopped posting/chatting in public channels entirely, leaving only the trolls.

The revolutionary in me says “hey, it’s time to take the forums BACK!”… and then the other part of me says “Yeah, right, you do that”.

  3. I guess WoW’s popularity explains a lot of the poor community thing. With so many folks playing the game there are bound to be a lot of idiots among them. However WoW’s achiever focussed culture may also be part of the problem. The whole I am better than you because I have bigger shoulder pads thing.

Interesting social experiment coming up in a few weeks. Take a game that is known for having one of the best communities out there: Lotro and make it free to play. Will the influx of free players drag the community downhill or will the “culture” of the game prevail.

  4. Is it really that different? EVE’s community sucks too, many F2P communities suck, even a game I love like FFXI had sucky aspects to the community. Or is WoW just the modern bugbear we can all blame like Walmart?

  5. I think WoW’s community sucks mainly because there is no enforcement of whatever code Blizzard says they have. Lotro’s community is great, in large part, because Turbine is very strict in it’s enforcement of expected standards. In Lotro, you can get banned for being rude to someone or saying something offensive. This rarely happens in WoW. I think Lotro’s community will continue to be top notch because Turbine will continue with it’s enforcement of it’s policies.
