Weird Question of the Day
Place your bets in the Bio Break office pool right now:
- What subscription-based MMO will go F2P this year (that hasn’t already been announced)?
- What MMO will most likely be shuttered this year?

Final Fantasy shuts down. STO goes F2P, either for a) limited Federation ships or (b) limited Klingon play.
1. STO and WAR
2. Lego Universe and FFXIV
Yeah, STO going F2P is pretty much imminent me thinks, and possibly Fallen Earth, and I pray for WAR’s soul again.
Shuttered? There is too much money in Final Fantasy to shutter it. It’s cheaper to keep bleeding than to chop the arm off right now, IMHO. So, I don’t really feel like any will…
1. Going F2P: WAR
2. Shutting Down: Vanguard
STO goes F2P
VG shuts down
Since no one mentioned it, Age of Conan goes F2P.
Vanguard either F2P or Closed (I suspect Free)
STO Free if Champions succeeds
At this point, I do not expect any game to shutter…but, to go Free to play instead.
I’m going to say
1. AoC goes f2p
2. have to agree with moxie, Vanguard
If the CO transition goes well I can see STO changing, otherwise I think not.
Warhammer Online I think would be a candidate for both cases, one of them will happen.
I already demanded STO go F2P for 2011. I stand by that.
Shutting down: I’d say PlanetSide if it were not Smed’s darling. He’ll keep that going until PlanetSide Next comes out in 2017. Vanguard’s only cost is electricity and bandwidth, since no devs are working on it, so it is probably cheap enough to get along for another year unless somebody trips over the power cord. What I read about LEGO Universe over at KTR hurts me in a deep, personal place, but I think it will keep going.
I’m going to go obscure and say Clan Lord won’t be around by the end of 2011. There.
I’ll vote for AoC to go F2P because they have the staff to make it happen, albeit slowly.
WAR gets my vote to shut down because it’s EA and history has shown EA has little patience for underperforming MMOs, and if Mythic doesn’t have the staff to even update their website, they certainly don’t have the manpower to do a F2P overhaul.
Star Trek online will go f2p.
Hmm interesting.
F2P: I’m going with STO on this one.
Shuttered: I think Vanguard too. It can’t be substantially outperforming what The Matrix Online was doing when they closed it down.
Star Trek Online could go f2p (if Champions Online succeeds, I guess)
Warhammer might be shut down. No word from the producer since the end of October and I guess Bioware’s resources are going to SWTOR instead.
STO going F2P is pretty much a given. WAR should do it also, but would take some work on EA’s part, and they would probably just shut it down rather than do the work.
STO goes free to play.
WAR shuts down.
Free to play – one of the EA titles as the magic words “have tripled revenues” slowly percolate through the skulls of EA execs. Probably WAR, but I’ll lay outside bets on them dipping their toes with one of the older titles (UO or DAoC) instead. Needless to say, EA being EA, when it comes to the delicate balancing act between not taking enough money and driving customers away through shamelessly cynical price-gouging, they’ll turn the “shameless” dial up to 11.
Shuttered – part of me suspects it could be Fallen Earth, which would be a bit of a shame. As I don’t want to wish Fallen Earth ill, I will officially nominate Mortal Online instead, however it’s entirely possible that has already happened and nobody has noticed yet (or ever will). I also predict Jumpgate Evolution will get canned this year. does a game being stillborn before release count as a shuttering?
F2p will probably be STO or War. I say war because they are already testing waters with All of T1 being F2P. STO because well the game sucks imo.
Shutting down, unfortunately fallen earth will be one due to the layoffs I think. Mortal online probably as well. Vanguard I think will stay on. SOE is good about keeping games up, especially with their station pass it has a good incentive for it to stay
Free to play? I’m going with WAR. They’re halfway there already, as others have mentioned, and they’re not likely in dire straits.
Shuttered? Let’s really buck the trend and say that Allods is on its last legs as an American game.
Free to play: STO
Shut down: WAR
Free to play: STO, especially after reading:
“In the meantime, there is a lot of other great things happening around the office. Champions Online has set a date of when they will open the doors for Free to Play – starting January 25th. We will be watching closely to see how the public responds to this offer and evaluate whether or not it is something that would make sense for Star Trek Online.” Executive Producer STO Dan Stahl
Shuttered: WAR or Vanguard, probably both
Going F2P: STO, WAR
Shutting down: SWG (I think the corpse still moves)
STO was the F2P conversion I thought most likely, just like everyone else commenting here. I’d like to see SWG finally close it’s doors so TOR can really have the centre stage it deserves. But I can’t see SOE closing it as long as it turns a profit, no matter how small.
My guesses:
1. STO
2. Vanguard
F2P: STO, AoC
Shut-down: Unfortunately WAR. Rift will be the nail in WAR’s coffin.
I’m guessing STO will go f2p, but that depends on how CO will act when it’s F2P.
And MMO’s dying will probably be WaR, Vanguard, Mortal Online and a bunch of MMO’s noone has ever heard of or that are going to be cancelled (but that won’t count I suppose).
1. STO
2. Rift – Sorry Syp I know you have high hopes with this game
Echoing others
F2P: STO
Dead: Vanguard
1. STO
2. WAR
