One of the things I love about LOTRO is that the devs love their pop culture references but tend to be pretty sly about slipping them in (well, more sly than most in-your-face WoW-type references). I think that last night I found one of the best, and I had to just laugh with the perfection of it all.
So I’m finishing the last few virtues I need for my level-51 Lore-master before I head into Moria. Everything’s going well, except that the very last one I needed was Bilbo’s Buttons, which meant an expedition deep into Goblin Town in the Misty Mountains. Before my LM I’d never really spent much time in Goblin Town, but eGADS it’s huge. I’m really impressed and kind of intimidated by the scope of the place, but a careful adventurer at level should be able to make it through okay.
Still, Bilbo’s Buttons is a pretty annoying virtue to do, because it’s a mix of random drops from mobs and finding special clickies. I got them all except the last one that should’ve been in or around the goblin king throne room. I ran in there all suicidal-like, knowing that a mad dash to the clickie was the only chance I’d have amid all of the signature mobs. I couldn’t find it, but soon had about 30 mobs on my tail. So I jumped right down into the convenient pit that was in the middle of the throne room.
Waitaminute… this seems familiar…
My brain was processing that when I suddenly heard a few thuds and turned around to see a giant troll getting ready to smash me in the face. I juked around him and saw that I was in a spike pit open overhead for the amusement of the crowds.
Is this… seriously…?
I found an entrance, where the troll’s handler was standing, and I just had to give up and laugh. Laugh and die. It was, to a tee, the Rancor pit from Return of the Jedi. Bravo, Turbine, bravo!
Nice. You didn’t look for the bone and the rock?
You should also watch the interaction b/w the Goblin King and the Uruk beforehand….. This…is….GOBLIN TOWN!!!!!
We need to get a screenshot. Next time you see me on I’ll help you out. Maybe even get a kin run on the Goblin King.
The one time I went in there I solo’d it as a 65 RK and didn’t take the time to pay attention to the details.
This is pretty amazing. I’m with Capnhoppy; would you mind re-experiencing that deathtrap and get some screenshots for us?
Double bonus if you can kill the troll with a solid portcullis.
