6 Little Things I Like About Guild Wars

1. Watching a swarm of undead minions zerg your enemies.  I almost feel bad for them.  Almost.

2. Outdoor instances that get away from the “you’re in a dungeon” feeling.  So far, very few of the missions I’ve gone through in GW are inside a structure or underground, which helps at least mentally differentiate between the typical dungeon running feel.

3. Easy to learn, hard (and terribly long) to master.  Eight skills on a bar, easy.  Figuring out the right build for the right situation, hard.  It’s amazing how much there is to learn about this game, but I’m glad its barrier of entry is rather low.

4. Missions that have strategy and make me actually think instead of running through it on massacre auto-pilot.  Finishing a mission with all of the bonuses feels like a big accomplishment instead of routine humdrudgery.  However, missions also feel a lot more stressful because of it.

5. Quick in, quick out.  Guild Wars sessions are incredibly pain-free to experience, mostly because I can launch and be in the game within seconds, quick travel to whatever area I’m working on, and instantly shut down the program when I’m done.

6. I haz mini-pets.

  1. You forgot one (or maybe it’s a big thing):

    7. Between the original game and the expansions, there’s a TON of content.

I’ve been slowly working on my Hall of Monuments and have managed to get 14 points. ArenaNet is doing the right thing by allowing you to continue to amass HoM points after GW2 comes out, but GW2 looks so good I can’t imagine wanting to go back to GW.

  2. I’d like to know just how much money you’ve spent on the game so far.

  3. The more your explore GW, the better you get as a player, you get new skills, you get again better due to these skills and develop new tactics as well. That you can leave easily and fill up groups with henchmen as needed are wonderful things if you can’t or don’t want to spend your day looking for a group or just don’t want to play with anyone else but your 1-2 buddies.

GW2′s system seems at first glance less complex and interesting, but switching weapons for different skills and still having a choice about a few skills might make for a good compromise. We will see how it turns out.

  4. I’m glad you’re finding the level of complexity post-level 20 to be a challenge (and, I hope, fun). It’s my husband’s favorite part of the game bar none, and the reason we haven’t even finished Nightfall yet…. Gotta collect all those skills, you know!
