We’re saved! It’s LoneStar! Er, Bravestarr! No, wait, it’s WildStar!
NCsoft’s mystery MMO is a mystery no longer, as it announced that its Carbine Studios is working on WildStar, some sort of scifi/fantasy/cartoon pie-in-the-literal-sky game.
First things first — the cinematic trailer is insanely endearing, really well-done, and pretty funny in parts. I LOL’d, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Yeah, some people bash cinematics as being pointless wastes of resources and not representative of the game proper, but I don’t feel that way. A good cinematic trailer not only gets me excited, but it shares the spirit of the game with me, and WildStar’s is telling me that bright colors, a sense of humor, and high adventure is where it’s at. I’m half-won over right there.
While details are still coming in, from what I can ascertain WildStar wants to be all things to all players. The devs are making noise about how you can not only be a fighter, but choose a path of exploration, science or building if you so prefer. It’s interesting to me just how many MMO studios are saying stuff like this these days, as if the industry is realizing that it’s fallen into a massive rut and needs to shake things up. Of course, every dev team thinks they have the answer (an answer that doesn’t court massive risk, of course), and I’m deeply interested to see which of these games will make good on words and phrases like “player choice,” “impact the game world,” and “paprika.”
I’m all happy for more and more players to enter the field and try their hand at crafting a different type of MMO, because the more that do, the more chances we have of a breakout hit that at least reshapes the mold if not shatters it.

I thought the difference with Wildstar was that you could tailor your gameplay dependent on the class you chose. So if you chose a fighter type, you would fight more. An explorer type would be tasked to explore more.
I thought that was what Wildstar was all about. Too blinded by all the GW2 news I guess.
mmmm, paprika.
I was kind of hoping they were resurrecting the Silver Hawks IP, but that was just my inner child of the 80s and not a realistic hope.
@ Ravious – Maybe it is, I’ll admit I’m fuzzy on the specifics
I think everyone is Syp, they haven’t exactly said too much. though I was under the impression that you pick a class, like warrior, mage, whatever, and then pick your path; which is the whole soldier, explorer, builder thing that affects what challenges are available to you.
I loved the trailer, wanted a lot more of the animation, a whole movie worth.
The game itself seems to be MMO-lite, much like Torchlight or Diablo.
I pretty much agree with ScytheNoire, it looked a lot like what I imagine a sci-fi Torchlight MMO would. It also caught me completely by surprise – before this week I just hadn’t heard of it.
I’ve not dug much into the mechanics, but if it manages to retain that level of light humour then I’ll probably check it out
My first reaction to the trailer was: is Disney working on an MMO now?
I’m not sure the graphics are grown-up enough for me; while WoW was great, it was borderline in terms of cutsey and pink (for me). but trailers say little, it’s ingame we all want to see.
It’s a great trailer and it’s done the required job of putting WildStar on everyone’s radar. I thought it was interesting that this mini-cartoon has picked up a lot more traction than the somewhat lumbering promo for Otherland. How well-done these things are does matter.
On the other hand, it’s gameplay footage that matters, at least for me. It’s the extensive gameplay footage from GW2 and The Secret World that’s likely to prize money out of my pocket and I won’t be getting excited about WildStar until I see some actual gameplay (which probably won’t be until this time next year if it’s not due to release until 2013).
I agree with those that think this would make a great potential movie. I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually ARE planning a movie with this. Definitely has an interesting flavor to it. We’ll see what actual gameplay comes out of it later.
“I won’t be getting excited about WildStar until I see some actual gameplay”
@Bhagpuss: There are actually gameplay videos from Gamescon for the game.
Gazimoff: …”it looked a lot like what I imagine a sci-fi Torchlight MMO would.”
To me it looked exactly like what I would imagine a “WOW in Spa-a-a-ace!” game would look. Which sounds promising to me.
Game looks interesting but pulling out the Bravestarr reference was priceless.
