“So the next time you think about bitching about balance or opportunity in an MMO, consider this broad overview and realize that MMOs are about keeping as many people as happy as humanly possible while trying to keep all of these eggs and chainsaws in the air. It’s not an easy task, and is probably the second choice job for developers, because they couldn’t find a job as a police attack dog test subject.”
As an aside, I agree with most of what he says in this post. Skyrim would make a terrible MMO, and it’s perfectly okay to have both MMOs and single-player titles as types of RPGs.

On the money, per usual, both of you.
Good one. Good to read that after having read TONS of angst on the Lotro forums the past few days.
ATITD and Glitch are good examples where sandbox games work – though most evidently they are niche. UO, at least for the first 4 years, was another example.
There are plenty of guides for Skyrim, plenty of strategies to make your character amazingly overpowered. There are cheats, there are mods, there are a bajillion ways to play. And yet, they sold nearly 4 million copies and the forums are all positive.
A thing that bugs me. WoW is a type of MMO. Not all MMOs are WoW.
