My Guild Wars 2 line-up

Every so often I have a moment of clear realization that Guild Wars 2 is indeed coming this month.  Like my approach to Christmas and other exciting events, I try to keep from thinking about it as much as possible so as to make the wait more bearable (it helps that there’s so much else to be playing right now, too).

But following today’s moment of “holy crap it’s only a few weeks away!”, I decided to get a little of this excitement out of my system by mapping out the characters I plan to roll.  Might as well share, right?

Asura Engineer: I know, I know — this is hardly an original or unpopular combination.  Asura are proving to be quite the popular race (far more so than the poster child of Charr), and the Engineer profession fits the race like a mechano-glove.  Still, it’s what I want to play more than all else, so I’m going to not sweat what other people are doing.  This character will be my main and probably the only character I’ll play until I hit the level cap.  Steampunk and rifles, oh my.

Norn Mesmer: I went back and forth on rolling a Norn for my first character — they look to be the second least popular race according to my Massively poll — as I like their look and lifestyle.  And the Mesmer kind of charmed me in the last beta weekend.  The combination of the race and class seems to be off-beat, but it could definitely work for me.

Human Guardian: I typically shy away from straight-up melee and tank classes, but the guardian’s got some good press, and I should try to expand my boundaries somewhat.  Plus, I like my Captain in LOTRO, and the look is definitely part of it.

Sylvari Necromancer: Listen, if I’m going to play one of the plant people, I’m going to go counter-culture.  All death, all the time, baby!

Charr Ranger: Charr with guns are pretty cool, and I definitely want to squeeze a ranger into the lineup here (the other three classes I’ll leave for possible expansion races or whatnot).

  1. Rangers can’t use guns so you will have to make do with the charzooka ;)

I’ll be human ranger main with asura necro and norm warrior as alts

  2. I am going to be playing a Charr Engineer and an Asura Elementalist. Eventually I will be rolling a character for all classes as they are all fun. Can’t wait for release! :)

  3. Sounds like fun. I haven’t decided on a full line-up, though I know I’ll have one of each race. Mostly thinking about appropriate names. My main will be an engineer, fer sher; I just don’t know the race yet.

  4. Still trying to decide which out of Asura Engineer and Norn Warrior will be my main and which will be primus alt inter pares. Other alts are likely to be Charr Thief, Sylvari (melee) Ranger and Human Mesmer.

  5. My Engineer will be a Charr since they seem to be a better thematic fit than Asura. Charr are the more technologically advanced/steampunk race while Asura are more magi-tech focused.

I’m starting with a Norn Guardian for my “main” along with a Charr Engineer and an Asura Mesmer. A little later I’ll role a Charr Warrior and a Sylvari Necromancer.

  6. I’m leaning towards a norn engineer, norn Mesmer, human ranger, & human elementalist. I have no idea which one will be my main yet.

  7. I’ll probably have a norn mesmer, too (in addition to my human mesmer.) I think shape-shifting compliments the mesmer profession well, and I vaguely remember ANet attributing mesmer advancements like the greatsword to norn.

Sylvari necro is as counter-culture as it gets (with the possible exception of asura ranger like I’m contemplating.) I actually considered sylvari necro but summoning gooey walking nightmares is an odd way to go about protecting the Dream. Charr may be leery of magic (not stopping me from making an ele) but necromancy seems too perverse for the knightly sylvari. Hats off to anyone who can go that far against type.

  8. One of my friends made an interesting observation when he made a cabbage elf necro for BW3. You start off in an idyllic dreamscape and are basically told that it’s a paradise free from worry or want. And his first action in this peaceful wonderland?

He summoned up a monstrous balloon of flesh and bone knitted together with dark and terrible magic.

Personally, since I never give any thought at all to being special in an MMO, I’m making my first character a catman warrior. I would have gone with a Cimmerian, but honestly a) all the heavy armor I’ve seen looks terrible on them, b) the lack of chest armor hiding is shameful for a bunch of hulking barbarians, and c) I’m embarrassed to be associated with their giant Barbie doll women.

  9. Mesmer, Necro and Thief are my favourite classes at the moment, with engineer a little bit behind the top 3. Asura and Norn are my favourite race choices – will have to see how these gets combined. Possibly Norn Mesmer and Asura for Thief and Necro.

  10. That is very similar to my own lineup, except my Charr Ranger will start as my co-main character. My second “main” will be my Elementalist, the class I have instead of your mesmer, and it will be a Sylvari. I’ll also have an Asura Engineer (I never expected to like those little freaks, but by the Heavens they are amazing), and beyond that it’s just the same classes tied with different races: Norn Guardian and Human Necromancer.

Can’t wait for release… and to finally open by Collector’s Edition (damn you Felicia Day for teasing me about it).

  11. Hate to burst your bubble, but in Ghosts of Ascalon the Sylvari character is a Necromancer. Not exactly counter-culture if you seem to be following the book! ;)

  13. I’m still so wrapped up in WoW that I haven’t given GW2 a whole bunch of thought yet. I do know exactly what race and class I’m going to roll, though: Sylvari Thief. I’ve been playing casters too long, and thief looks like a lot of fun!
