I think he really missed a much bigger pool of players, those creating character names that are variations on Tolkein names. How many different ways can you make a name that sort of sounds like “Gandalf?”
I recall very early on in EverQuest seeing a necro on the E’ci server named “Sauronofmordor” because… you wouldn’t want somebody to think he meant some other Sauron.
I am ceaselessly amazed at how much legitimate, cool-sounding variation you can have for a name in 12 characters or less.
Horde versus Alliance? Psh, it’s all about Legolas versus Drizzt.
During Wrath of the Lich King in WoW, about 50% of all Horde players were Blood Elf death knights named after Final Fantasy characters.
