City of Roguecraft

patrick-warburton-the-tickYesterday I suggested that City of Heroes needed to shake things up to fight the upcoming onslaught of Champions Online and DCUO — competition is good for the blood, after all.  Following that, the team over at Paragon Studios pulled an all-nighter due to that intense blogging pressure and released the first news of their second expansion — City of Heroes: Going Rogue.

Okay, that’s not as catchy as “City of Villains” or anything, but it definitely appeals to stealth-playing characters.  What?  It’s not talking about dual-wielding dagger cheaters?  Oh.  Guess I’m misinformed.

Actually, any solid info about this expansion is minimal — what we do know is that there will be a mirror universe (where brown becomes grey, and grey becomes brown!), that players will be able to change their alignment from hero to villain (and vice versa), and that backstab will grant you a 200% crit, but only if you do it from stealth.

Good for them, really.  I’m still pumped for Champions, but it’s always exciting to see MMOs expanding, especially after so many years.  They darn well better add more than just new zones and the ability to flip sides — players will expect new powersets and playable features as well.  But the faithful CoX players now have something to cheer about other than meow missions.

Other bloggers are weighing in on this:  Hudson, Spinks and Ardy.

It really is great to see something like this coming. The mission architect debacle was demoralizing, so it’s nice to see that they have other content on the horizon.

I’ll likely stop being grumpy later today and start blogging about it.

Praetorians have long since been a great tool for the rpers. Want an evil twin? Well just have them come from Praetorian Earth.

In fact if i15 and the 5th Taskforce does what people think… we could end up with a Statesman/Reichsmann/Tyrant three way brawl.

For extra squick, check out the bio for Dominatrix, the Praetorian version of Miss Liberty (y’know…Statesmans granddaughter)

I hope they update the graphics or else they could be in really trouble from Champions. But updated graphics a few new classes, tons or content (2 expansions and architect) and a bad Champions launch, COH might do all right. Champions is getting a lot of fantasy players excited about something different. I hope COH can cash in on it.

I was thrilled when I caught this news in my email this morning. I’m currently in a one month resub to CoH to check out the Mission Architect. I’m not planning to keep the account open, but I could see coming back to the game for more than a quick dip when Going Rogue releases. I enjoy several of the Villain archetypes, but I’ve never been very fond of the Rogue Islands setting. GR provides a nice way to roll up a Brute and bring him over to Paragon city.
