I’d buy both, but would be far more intrigued to dig into BioWare’s game first.

  2. Fuzzy December 7, 2009 / 1:35 pm

I get the feeling everyone would go for the new shiny MMO, especially if it’s by a big name like Bioware 🙂

  3. Tesh December 7, 2009 / 1:56 pm

If Bioware goes with a GW business model, I’ll buy and play it. If SWTOR is just another sub game, I’ll wait until it has a free trial out and then play it, and in the meantime, do a ten day trial in Cataclysm. I really would like to see both and play both.

  4. Jennifer December 7, 2009 / 1:59 pm

I’d pick Cataclysm because I have absolutely zero interest in playing a Star Wars MMO.

    What an excellent question!

It’s very interesting to see the score so far with TOR a long way ahead. I wonder what the final result of the poll will be and perhaps more importantly if when it comes to it people will break out in conservatism at the last minute and stick to what they know.

I really hope TOR doesn’t launch against WoW. Warhammer rather brashly decided to do so because they were feeling over-confident and it really hurt them.

    SWTOR hands down.

  7. Hudson December 7, 2009 / 2:24 pm

Ahh the young and excited. So confident in every new MMO that hits the market, especially with an extra chance to SOLO! YIPEEE!

    Pass.

    WoW expansion all the way.

I would be twatting people with me +2 Stick O’ Light.

The thing with WoW at this point is that it’s always going to be there and missing out on new quest hubs on release day is actually a good thing. Although you can be damn sure SW will suffer from the same overcrowding problem on day one it really comes down to:

Do I want to be doing some new quests in the game I have been playing for five odd years or running around ganking Jawa?

  9. Daxius December 7, 2009 / 2:58 pm

Wheres the option for both? There’s 24 hrs in a sick day after all!

If ToR is as fun as SWG pre “skill progression nerf of doomandwhathappenedtomygamesubscribercancellation”, ToR might get 16 hrs.

  10. Carson63000 December 7, 2009 / 3:10 pm

I’m not planning on playing TOR no matter when it comes out. Like Jennifer, I have absolutely zero interest in playing a Star Wars MMO.

  11. Syp December 7, 2009 / 3:26 pm

Ahh the old and disillusioned. So cynical at anything new that comes down the pike, especially if it isn’t exactly like the old school games they cut their teeth on. 😀

  12. vekkth December 7, 2009 / 4:16 pm

SWToR hands down. i dont think i will actually play Cata even if SWToR comes out very late. i am burned out with wow.

  13. Dril December 7, 2009 / 4:20 pm

Time and many failures have proven the conservative option the best option in the long term (even a virtual chatroom is more fun than staring at queues!)

(Although, I now have a profound love of LOTRO.)

  14. kaozz December 7, 2009 / 4:30 pm

I’m torn on this one. Honestly as much as I am looking forward to SWTOR I would have to say I’m more excited about Cataclysm. I know I like WoW. I’m not going to drop it like a hot potato for something new and shiny.

…I may go out the next day and get SWTOR lol. I’m sure I’ll play both.

  15. Scarybooster December 7, 2009 / 4:33 pm

If I only had $50 to spend for a year on MMO new boxes, I would go with WoW. I know I would be playing a stable fun game.

If I only had to choose for 30 days what I wanted to play, I would play SWTOR to see it. Then I would go buy WoW.

  16. Fuzzy December 7, 2009 / 4:41 pm

We should all strive to be educated mumorpugers and try new things. I hate it when people complain that “all MMOs are the same” when they haven’t made an effort to step out of their comfort zone and try something different.

I’m not saying that statement doesn’t have any truth to it… it’s just that there are some alternatives out there if you look around.

  17. Mesar December 7, 2009 / 4:44 pm

I choose not to vote at this time. I haven’t heard enough about TOR that really engages me.

I like economy games and instanced group PvP. Bioware hasn’t spoken about these things yet so the title is yet to grab pre-order attention.

At this stage I will be pre-ordering Cataclysm. WoW keeps getting better and better at catering for casuals, a camp of which I’m a full-time member.

  18. Longasc December 7, 2009 / 5:01 pm

I would play SWTOR. This said, I am not too interested in either.

I would like a Dark Ages medieval style MMO. And no, I do not think Mortal Online is going to be the real thing… unfortunately. 😦

  19. We Fly Spitfires December 7, 2009 / 5:27 pm

I picked Cataclysm. How odd that so many people favour SW over it. Still, looks like we’re going to get staggered release dates. STO in Feb, Cataclysm in April/May (or so my sources tell me) and then SW:TRO in early 2011 (my guess).

  20. moxie December 7, 2009 / 6:42 pm

I’m sure it’s a huge shock that I’d pick Cataclysm… not just because I enjoy WoW, but because I have no interest in a Star Wars MMO. It’d take something more epic and story-driven to pull me away, like Twilight Universe.

    I keed! I keed! 😀

  21. Rer December 7, 2009 / 6:53 pm

Gotta go for SW:ToR. I’ve played WoW for 3 years, and I’m enjoying myself much more now that I’ve moved on and have expanded my gaming portfolio.

  22. pitrelli December 7, 2009 / 7:11 pm

WoW all the way Im afraid, SW:TOR just doesnt do anything for me and the recent announcements have just compounded it to doom in my eyes

  23. Graktar December 7, 2009 / 8:46 pm

SWTOR for sure. I quit WoW in disgust at level 72 after getting sick to death of yet more quest grinds, faction grinds, xp grinds, gear grinds, crafting grinds . . grind grind grind. WoW needs to invest in some horizontal expansions instead of always going up up up.

Although Cataclysm sounds like a step in the right direction, and I’d like to see what they do to Azeroth, I’m not interested in grinding to level 80 so far behind everyone else (i.e. solo) or starting over to see the new low level stuff. So, bah. SWTOR at least will be new. I hope.

  24. tarisai December 8, 2009 / 10:24 am

I went with TOR and not only because Star Wars pretty much shaped my moral compass and personality growing up (my parents thought they did a great job. Sorry Mum, Obi Wan is to thank…). I see it as my duty, as a gamer, to support an MMO which is moving forward with story and cinematic elements.

A lot of people aren’t going to play this game because Star Wars isn’t their thing, regardless if turned out to be huge success – what will make this game suffer in it’s early days after launch are all the nae sayers who just like to spray bummer vibes around for the sake of it.

Out of principle, because I believe this plague to be the number one threat to MMO progression I will support it all the way. I am going to be a fan boi purely to spite these sprites.

Not like I’ll have time. I haven’t been able to play any MMO for months and am still only lvl 12 in Dragons Age!

If I enjoyed WoW I’d buy the new expansion. I like old things made shiny and understand everyone’s excitement.

  25. Utakata December 8, 2009 / 3:22 pm

I’ve picked Cat…because I know the WoW product well enough, that it would likely be a good investment on my return. Plus I really want to see where it goes with my characters and lore. I suspect it maybe envolope pushing…which could be a really good thing.

On ther otherhand, SW:TOR has a great company name behind which ups it’s chance to be likely successful, despite little experience previously in MMO’s (like Blizz), But I can’t help think it could turn into another Warhammer. The game with a lot of potential that was supposed to comptete with WoW, now competes against that EA exec who may want to pull it’s plug. I like to see how SW:TOR does in the first 6 months of release before I go jumping in there. I hope it does well though.
