Quote of the Day

“Man.  I hope The Old Republic beats the crap out of WoW.”

~ my WoW-playing brother-in-law, after watching the latest TOR cinematic

Oddly…my sentiments are similar with Guild Wars 2 too. Perhaps we maybe priveledge to see some tag team action with both MMO’s. Presuming of coarse, they both live up to their names. 🙂

You know what, screw the game and give us a movie.

I have to say that at the moment, I hope any game will kick WoW’s behind. Just to make sure that Blizzard will really do something new with WoW again…

Yes, the trailer was awesome, though we must remember that’s not actual gameplay. LOL.

That said, I think this game will do very, very well. I don’t think it will topple WoW, at least not within a year of its inception.

A not-so-bold prediction: it’s the first game besides WoW to top a million players in the US and stay that way (Aion may have very briefly eclipsed that number, but I doubt it did beyond a few months).

A bolder prediction: 5-8 million players by year two, but doesn’t ever quite eclipse the number WoW currently has — because I don’t think sci-fi games have quite the appeal of fantasy. If it does “beat” WoW, it will be from stealing more of WoW’s player base than expected.

Boldest prediction: Because of games like TOR (and maybe even the increasing number of decent FTP fantasy games out there), even with Cataclysm coming out, WoW loses a good chunk of subs over the next 2 years, though WoW will be able to fudge their numbers a little, because once you have a character and account, even if you don’t sub up every month, you may take a peak in every now and then to catch up.

I hope the only thing that beats WoW is the second Blizz MMO. There. How’d’ya like that, BioWare?

I don´t care about TOR subs. With that IP, it will have more than enough subs to keep going as soon as it is out.

I just hope it will not be too much of a theme park mmo and that the die hard blizzard fans will get out of it as soon as they realize it´s not WoW 2.0.

Too bad it won´t come out anytime soon 😦

Hehe. It’s funny how so many people love to hate WoW! 🙂

@ Gordon – But see, he LOVES WoW. He just wants this game to be so much better.

@Syp: But this is what I don’t get: HOW will TOR make WoW better? Yes, other games have driven some innovation, but most of it has come from Blizzard themselves (Dungeon Finder? I don’t see that in any game.) In fact, for me TOR looks like an RPG too far in my MMO; I don’t buy this whole “it’s so much more heroic when it’s you alone.” No, not really. It’s all about the odds, not the numbers. Charge of the Light Brigade: odds, not numbers. For me, the key aspect of MMOs is the MM, not the RPG, and I think (without any actual facts) that that’s the similar to a fair few MMOers. Social is better than solo; a good raid is better than a good quest.

@ Dril – You misunderstood me. He loves WoW, but wants TOR to even top that by creating something to love even more. I’m not saying TOR is doing anything to WoW, other than possibly becoming a better game and a greater phenomenon.
