Ship Up or Shape Out

I.

Get.

My.

Own.

Ship.

There.  That wasn’t so hard, was it BioWare?  That’s all I needed — my own ship-slash-player-housing.  And you, wonder of wonders, delivered.  From IGN UK:

Every player, regardless of their chosen class, will get their own starship to command across the galaxy.

SWEET.  Oh, there’s more?

BioWare has created a robust customization package so that you can fully trick out your ship with premade gear sets or your own hand-picked items. Though BioWare isn’t showing off the ships in action just yet, they assure us that there will be thousands of different variations so that each person can feel as if they have a unique vessel.

First of all, who doesn’t like the word “robust”?  It always sends a tingle down my spine: robust.  And second, we get to trick out our own ships?  Yes, please, and don’t stop the love!

Of course, we don’t know if this is external customization, housing-like customization, or what, and we have no idea yet if the ships are just for transportation/RP/story, or if you can actually fly and fight in them.

But this is a good, good start to the number one thing I was hoping we’d hear this year.  It’s just not Star Wars without the first part of that name, and a ground-only MMO would feel like a lobotomized version of what it could become.

Anyway, this left me smiling today.  How about you?

    Smiling. Definitely smiling.

To be honest, I never had a doubt. Even in KOTOR we were given a ship as a place to stash our companions and to serve as a “meet up” point. And also, this is Bioware; they have the resources and they’ve had a lot of time to work on this. I figure if even Cryptic could offer a degree ship customization in Star Trek Online…

That said, i noticed you posted this under STO, I wasn’t sure if you were being ironic 😛

Just as long as my ship isn’t infested with loose frogs or over-critical old women.

I can’t wait. The thing I definatly played most in Star Wars Galaxies is the Jump to Lightspeed expansion.
Just reliving the old Wing Commanders/X-Wing vs Tie Fighter day’s ^_^

    I’m grumpy but you’re infectious.

Okay I’ll admit it the ship bit interests me.

I LOVE the word robust, i really should use it more myself.

Yea I dunno, I’m just afraid of hopping on the hype train. I rode that train with WAR, and it was, let’s just say a bumpy ride.

You should change the category, as this is Star Wars and not Star Trek. Something I found rather confusing, considering this post was mostly about star ships, so you ought to change that 😉 But yes, looking forward to TOR.

These were really exciting news, i hope it will work out well, i don´t need space combat but i´m looking forward to the customization part 😀

I’m dubious about the whole ship thing. I just don’t think it works in MMOs because it basically ends up creating two sub-games that don’t mesh. Still, let’s wait and see!

I’m fairly certain that they’re just akin to the ships from KotoR or Mass Effect. Meaning you don’t really pilot them, but use them as a sort of player housing and interplanetary travel. Still cool, and I’m sure expansions could bring forth actual space flight control.
