So no more of that lousy 2010 stuff — 2011’s here, baby, and it’s going to rock the house! I’m sure there’s a much better way to state that in modern teenage lingo, probably using words like “groovy” and “cool cats”, but I’ll play the old fogie here.
I am, in all respects, excited about 2011. For one thing, I’m going to be graduating seminary this spring, which means that my four-year marathon through a Masters program will come to an end and I’ll have a couple nights of the week returned to me (huzzah!). For another, I think my wife and I are going to Vegas, and I’m definitely planning on attending PAX East this spring.
I’m absolutely psyched about the upcoming roster of MMOs, including the Big Three: RIFT, The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2. Out of all of those, I think GW2 will be released the latest, and perhaps not even in 2011. If that happens, it’s okay, because I have more than enough games to keep me occupied. LOTRO will continue to be my mainstay, and I’ll hopefully get both my captain and lore-master to max level before the next expansion releases.
For my gaming resolutions, I’m going to stick with four:
- Give a fair amount of playtime to each game in my current roster, perhaps divvying up my evening hours from spending 3 hours on one game to 1 hour on 3 games, or assigning nights.
- Continue to try new games and be open to new experiences. I really enjoyed sampling tons of MMOs in 2010, and I think it’s made me appreciate the genre even more.
- Seek out and welcome opportunities to group and be social. I need to do this more, and I really want to run more dungeons and help out guild mates more this year.
- Be more easy-going and less reactionary in my writing. It’s just a game, it’s just a game, it’s just a game.
I don’t typically do predictions for the year, but I’ll say that if 2010 is like any other year, we’re going to have one or two big-name releases everyone fawns over, one or two major disappointments, quite a few controversial stories, and a breakout hit that nobody sees coming. I think 2011’s going to offer gamers a whole lot more choice in both payment plans and with new games, which means that the pressure on older titles is going to be increased.
Good luck with your gaming resolutions! Inspires me to write a few of my own, though I doubt they’ll differ very much, hehe. The time one is a big thing. I’ve had a great time reading your blog this year as well as your work on Massively, keep up the fantastic work. 🙂
Your post yesterday has inspired me to branch out and try a few different games. I currently only have one in my stable and I need a bit of a change. I too am waiting for RIFT and GW2. Still haven’t gone back to GW1 to check out all my toons so maybe tha will be on the list as well!
Thanks!
Great resolutions!
One of my resolutions is actually to game less, but make it count when I do. There are other real-life goals that I want to accomplish, and while gaming still has it’s place in my life it may need to take a backseat to other things.
The husband and I are also considering going to PAX East this year, assuming we can get the time off from work. It’d be our first geek convention ever!
2011 sure is going to be an interesting year, especially if SW:TOR and GW2 both release. They could have a huge impact on the genre and I’m quite excited to see what will happen 😛
