Fun-sized Bio Break

As has been said a million times before, there’s nothing “fun” about “fun-sized” candy.  It’s a harsh lesson in the evils of marketing for kids to absorb, leading them down a path toward endless cynicism and candy gorging.

But sometimes there’s too much going on to devote a huge post to every single interesting thing going on, so today you’re going to have to settle for a fun-sized Bio Break, with small, easy-to-swallow nuggets.

SWTOR free-to-play: Whew.  One of the biggest news stories of the year, for sure.  There’s a lot to be said on this, and I’m saving a lot of that commentary for the two podcasts I do.  However, implications aside, I’m really for this.  Players now have a lot more choice when it comes to approaching the game, and it will certainly help it weather the upcoming storm of new releases this fall.  My wife is downright delighted; she loves SWTOR but watches our budget fiercely, so she dropped her sub and has been waiting for F2P ever since.

New TSW update: Yesterday really conspired against me in regards to getting any gaming time, but I was able to sneak in 45 minutes at the end of the day to start looking at the new missions.  It’s interesting to me how “new quests” in most MMO updates are treated with very little fanfaire, but here they are genuinely welcomed as compelling content.  TSW tells great stories through these, and thus far I’ve been enjoying going back to previous zones and getting to know some of these main characters even more.  It’s a great model for expanding the game’s content horizontally, and I look forward to each month’s update in the future.

TSW weekend: This is a huge weekend for TSW — not only did the game launch its first update, but it’s doing a free-for-all trial weekend.  In addition to that, players have a shot at earning some valuable store currency if they complete 30 quests over the course of 5 days.  I’m definitely going to shoot for this, and have started to map out where all the quick repeatable side quests are so that I can make sure I hit this mark.  Between the update’s new quests and the incentive to re-run 30 lowbie quests, I expect that my character will come out ahead with much-needed SP to get my gear up to par for Blue Mountain.  Blue Mountain — that’s a post for another day.

It is super easy to knock out those 30 missions. You can pop back to Kingsmouth and burn through the missions at the Police Station in no time and couple them with a few Side Missions and before you know it easily have half of them done in about 60 minutes or so. The AP/SP you get are nice too. I have used this method to unlock inner rings all the way around on my character and get comfortable with new builds.

I’ve been meaning to do a Tips post on TSW but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’ll give you my number one tip now though:

DO NOT SPEND A SECOND LONGER IN BLUE MOUNTAIN THAN YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!

I’ve now seen and done plenty of content in all the open zones in the game and Blue Mountain is a horrible experience compared to any of them. Egypt is not only orders of magnitude more enjoyable, it’s easier too. Unfortunately there’s a little bit of storyline you probably can’t avoid going to Blue Mountain for but other than that I’d pretend it doesn’t exist.

I’m too stubborn to skip content. I just can’t.

Syp… I have yet to make it out of the Savage Coast so I am right there with you on skipping content! I think at my pace I will be thru all 3 zones about late September and I am perfectly fine with that 🙂
