February poll analysis

Quick post today to wrap up the poll on what you guys and gals played in February.  Let’s go to the results!  We had 602 votes, which is (I think) an all-time high here at Bio Break.  I’ll try to bring this back on a monthly basis, so expect another poll in early April!

Top Five

1. Guild Wars 2 (117 votes)
2. Lord of the Rings Online (69 votes)
3. The Secret World (67 votes)
4. Star Wars: The Old Republic (54 votes)
5. World of Warcraft (49 votes)

Thoughts: I’m always keeping in mind that these votes don’t represent the MMO community at large, just players who happen to be reading this blog.  That said, it’s an interesting — if not unexpected — top five.  Guild Wars 2 is dominating by a large margin, definitely helped by its business model and, y’know, being a pretty cool game.  LOTRO’s still going on strong as the #2 slot, which I’m pleased to see.  67 of you awesome people are playing TSW and have endeared yourselves to my heart — that’s even more than WoW’s 49 (although the last one is the only sub-only game in the top 5).  But yeah, I could see these being the more popular games amongst multi-game players.

Bottom 10

6. [Tie] Star Trek Online (29 votes)
6. [Tie] TERA (29 votes)
6. [Tie] RIFT (29 votes)
9. Defiance beta (15 votes)
10. [Tie] EverQuest II (14 votes)
10. [Tie] EVE Online (14 votes)
12. [Tie] PlanetSide 2 (13 votes)
12. [Tie] DC Universe Online (13 votes)
14. Neverwinter beta (10 votes)
15. Vanguard     10     2%

Thoughts: RIFT, a once-prominent favorite, is still going strong but much less than before — in a three-way tie with STO and TERA, nonetheless. Apart from a pair of betas and EVE, SOE has a steady, if not huge, presence in this bracket with four of its titles.

Dregs

DDO (7 votes) still has a few fans, but man has this game fallen from its post-F2P high. Several people wrote in for World of Tanks (7 votes) so I’ll include it next month. I’m surprised to see that even six people logged into Guild Wars 1 last month — or two in the original, subscription PlanetSide, for that matter. Titles that didn’t garner a single vote include Runes of Magic, Asheron’s Call, Global Agenda, and Lineage II. Not too surprising save RoM.

  1. You should definitely add at least Diablo 3, Path of Exile and League of Legends if you’re adding World of Tanks.. those would be interesting to see numbers for.

  2. I’m suprised that rift polls so low,its expansion is still newish. You would think that they would switch to ftp consideringthen number of games above them are all btp or ftp. Tera rating prob reflects its new ftp, I checked it out for a day but won’t play it again

  3. I think an interesting way to cut this data would be to layer it over your own posts. So take a look at yyour own posts, what percent are about X game and Y game. Trend that over month to month with your poll data, and I hypothesize that you’d see that the poll results trail your own posting habits.

  4. I was going to make the same suggestion that Cubbish made. That would be interesting. Like him, I suspect that the relative popularity of each game in your poll depends on what MMOs you’ve been writing about over a given month. For example, RIFT has fallen out of favour in your poll history but you no longer write about it, so RIFT players may have moved on from your blog.

  5. Yea, i agree with the 2 previous posters. A quick scan in my reader indicates the last month a large quantity of the posts were LOTRO and GW2 with a little Secret World . So it’s not surpring those are the top 3 on the voting list 😉

At least it’s a good illustration how our little minds work and how it’s all a trap 😉

  6. another thing to note is, your poll allowed for multiple choices, which changes results quite a bit. I personally I have selected guild wars 2, SWTOR and Tera myself, but if you had asked me to pick just one, being be the game I played the most? it would be SWTOR. I played guild wars for only a few hours that month, and same for Tera. another thing to ponder.
