Quote of the Day: Real world design

“What people want from a virtual world that they are devoting their precious leisure time to is the measured addition of the exciting things about the real world along with careful subtraction of the tedious and annoying things. Finding the right balance between both is the art of good MMORPG design.”

While I appreciate where Wolfshead is coming from on this, I must admit I am a bit bemused that he is acting surprised that an unabashedly retro MMO project is somehow stuck in the past.

Maybe Brad needs to change the name of his company. Revisionary Realms? Reactionary Realms?

As a philosophy that would all well and good if only there was the slightest sign of unanimity about what the “tedious and annoying” things are. I, for example, love inventory management and when I’ve written about it in the past I’ve had others comment that they enjoy it too. That’s just one example of something many find “tedious and annoying” that others actively seek out and enjoy.

It’s very clear that a sizable subset of the MMO audience relishes things like slow travel and down-time that others see as irritating, pointless time-sinks. Exactly the same thing happens in real life. Some people want just want to get on the plane and get to the resort in a couple of hours, others like to travel there by road, rail and sea and take a week or two.

If we all want different things, some of us are always going to be disappointed. No MMO can be all things to all players.

Count me among those that can’t stand inventory management, Bhagpuss. >.< Any addon/mod that can help me organize my stuff automatically and dump the trash is a godsend. I'd even take a game that did away with vendor trash altogether.

I do like train rides, though.

I never understood the purpose of having “loot” whose only use is to be sold to a vendor for coins. Just give me the coins and save everyone some hassle.

I assumed it was some kind of historical hangover of the way MMOs originated.

TSW doesn’t have a lot of loot, and as far as I remember none it is stuff that has no reason to exist apart from being sold.

Yeah I’d have have to check closely, but come to think of it I can’t recall that TSW has any loot that would not be useful to someone. Except maybe flares. >.>
