A Kerbal space diary

kerbalDiary of a Kerbal astronaut in training

Oh hey! Kerbal Space Program finally released and it’s on sale! I should totally pick this up — it sounds great and my friends have raved about it.

Aw those Kerbals are so cute. Gonna be fun killing them upon reentry.

Hey, launching a rocket ship is pretty easy! Hit spacebar to jettison boosters. Nice. So cool.

I’m in SPAAAAACE!

[hours and 12 attempts to get through the third stage through the tutorial later]

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THAT THIS GAME REQUIRES ADVANCED CALCULUS TO PLAY? WHY AM I SUCH A BAD ASTRONAUT? WHY CAN’T I STOP CRASHING MY SHIP INTO THE LARGE PLANET?

  1. Haha… I was afraid of something like that when I peeked briefly at this game. I’ll just quietly sit over here while you continue to ram planets. XD

  2. Hah! Well. There’s basically three ways you can play KSP, and they’re both rewarding in their own way.

Way 1: learn advanced calculus, or just be an intuitive wiz at firing space rockets. Get to planets, feel great.

Way 2: Get MechJeb, let the mechanical Jebediah do much of the calculus work. Still feel great about the large-scale planning of how to reach planets. I feel like this is what being middle to upper management must feel like.

Way 3: Build wacky rockets. Watch them explode. Giggle. Great if you’re not completely sober.

In completely unrelated terms. KSP actually released? I’m astonished. I guess that’s what the small Steam update was for…

  3. That sounds a bit like my experience although in the end I think I ended up playing the third way described in the above post!
