Sunday Serenade: Flashback, Cool World, Battletoads, and more!

Time for another Sunday morning dose of random songs that I’ve been listening to this past week! Welcome to Sunday Serenade — now let’s crank the jams up with…

“Gravy Yard” from Blazing Beaks — No idea what this game is, but the tune in particular is a heavy, thudding dreamscape that I want to lose myself in. Reminds me a smidge of the Bastion OST.

“Stage 1” from Battletoads and Double Dragon — It was a really weird team-up that resulted in a really fun game… and some rockin’ tunes. This one’s simple but I lapped it up.

“Ice Ice FX” by FX — I’ve been sifting through a LOT of keygen music, which is basically chiptunes with a sordid past. It’s sometimes a while before I find something worthy, but catchy little ditties like this that make me think of the ’80s make the hunt worthwhile.

“You’ve Been Notified” from Cool World (SNES) — This is a trippy, bubbly track that is both soothing and addictive.

“Credits” from Flashback (Sega CD) — I take it that this is a rarer version of the end credits, which is a shame because it’s really well done. Lifts my spirits to hear it, it does.

They actually made a video game of Cool World? Hoo boy. I remember seeing the movie in theaters, as one of maybe a dozen people in the place, and after it ended I had to reconsider my opinion of the local movie critic. I always thought I would like movies he hated, and up until Cool World I was right. But holy cow, was that movie bad.
