Picture of the Day

PapaJohnsPizza1

Okay, this is sort of a redux of EverQuest 2’s infamous /pizza command, and it’s no less ridiculous than it was the first time.  Who is so tethered to a game system and/or so ignorant of how a telephone works that they can’t order pizza without Sony’s assistance?

  1. I’m shocked and horrified by this development.

Wasn’t /pizza implemented through Pizza Hut? Through what bribery did Papa Johns steal the exclusive deal with Sony? 😉

P.S. Cinnapie? Is that a cinnamon stick the size of a pizza? I’m not sure where that ranks compared to the Domino’s “Fettucini Alfredo in a Bread Bowl” meal on the public health disaster scale, but it’s pretty bad.

  2. “Who is so tethered to a game system and/or so ignorant of how a telephone works that they can’t order pizza without Sony’s assistance?”

Thats such an elitist remark right there, a little bit of thinking should let you realize this ‘feature’ is more for the impulsive lot that would be easily tempted to buy a pizza when its a couple of button presses away. Of course these people are still capable of going and using a phone, but this deal is about capitalizing on a player’s sudden urges and the fact that it barely seems like you’re spending money when buying something this way.

  3. 40 years ago, people used to say “Are we so lazy that we have to pick up a phone and order a pizza to be delivered rather than driving to the pizzeria to pick it up?”

5 years ago (and still today, in Syp’s case) people said “Are we so lazy that we have to order our pizza off a web site rather than get up and pick up the phone and order a pizza?”

I can’t remember the last time I ordered a pizza by phone. How archaic!

5 years from now people will say “Gawd! Remember when you had to use a personal computer and a web browser in order to order a pizzza. How retro!!”

Order Papa John’s via the PS3 or the laptop… what’s the biggie? Either works for me.

Those Cinnipie things rawk too, btw!!!

  4. @ Percy – Absolutely, it is. Because I am the elite of pizza ordering fools, ruling from up on high. And if you want me to deploy a little bit of thinking, you better press “X” and send me $20.

  5. I guess I’m also surprised that Papa John thinks people actually play the PS3 enough that they’re going to make business this way.

  6. Yeah I think the failure comes not in using the PS3 to order a pizza, it’s from using the PS3

I don’t know, is our world going to turn out like WALL-E, all these fat people putzing around on grav-couches?

  7. I think company executives assume video gamers are too fat and/or lazy to be able to move from the chair they are sitting in and would prefer to go through some complex mechanic of using their current computering device to order the next available Heart Attack Special Pizza.

    Hmm… pizza.

  8. First off;

“Yeah I think the failure comes not in using the PS3 to order a pizza, it’s from using the PS3”

While I won’t say I’m a PS3 fanboi (because I can rant about it quite a bit, and the PC is still my gaming platform of choice), I have to ask, what’s wrong with the PS3? I love mine.

Secondly; I guess I really don’t see the big gripe. Do you also have a problem with people ordering pizza online via PC or online bill paying, or anything else that makes life less complicated due to the wonders of the Internets? The PS3 has a web browser, you can order from there, why not just make it easier by doing it through the XMB?

While I myself use the phone, I only do that because I do carry-out so I don’t incur the delivery fee.

  9. I’ll echo the comments that I don’t order via phone anymore if I can go to a website but I also agree most ps3s don’t get used enough to merit this including my glorified bluray player

syp you really should check out a pizza website especially since you love character creators so much…

  10. This would be amazing if there was actually a Papa John’s near me these days (the only one willing to deliver to my part of Chicago closed – D’oh!).

  11. A bit of historical perspective: the holy grail in home entertainment for a while was the “set top box”. This was the one box that would do it all for you: show TV, watch movies, play games, etc. The goal for each company was to own this mythical device and thus control all entertainment in the home. Cable TV and console manufacturers were the biggest players hoping this would lead to the big pay-off.

The other bit of information is that you always see news stories about the PlayStation (both 2 and 3) talked about as a “computing device” instead of a game console. The reasons for this is that game consoles sometimes have import tariffs on them. This may be used as an opportunity to show that the PlayStation is more than just a game console, that it is more like a personal computer.

Some information to spur thought. 🙂

  12. Lots of people use PS3s…many of them are the kind of folks who would be inclined to order pizzas as quickly as possible (at a LAN party it’s all I eat, so I assume those who do PS3 gaming together would feel the same). I have to say I agree completely with Pete’s comments and his response post.

  13. I think it’s more papa john wants low-cost advertising on a platform that will give them a lot of eyeballs. You don’t even have to deliver a lot through it, just seeing that button will make you think of them when you do want pizza.

Though the cinnapie is over the top.
