MMO Topics That Have Been Beaten To Death (yet we still rehash)

  • Girls play MMORPGs?  What?
  • People who play characters of the opposite gender
  • RMT
  • How I could design a better MMORPG than any of these studios
  • Permadeath
  • Hardcore/raiders vs. casuals
  • Whether or not open betas are actually betas at all, or just marketing previews
  • Trying to define what a “massively” multiplayer online role-playing game is, arguing about whether a game fits this non-standard definition of a MMO, and griping that “MMO” doesn’t really mean anything anyway
  • What open beta “means”
  • F2P and how much you love/hate it
  • THE GRIND
  • How much everything was better back in the olden days of MMOs before they got user friendly and more people started playing them
  • NGE

That pretty much covers the entire MMO experience, doesn’t it?

  2. rowan September 9, 2010 / 4:07 pm

    OK, I’m ignorant. RMT? NGE?

  3. Chris September 9, 2010 / 4:13 pm

Jeez, Syp. Way to cut down 90% of the topic selection. What’s next, no more writing about how WoW is the great evil of the genre?

  4. Waafer September 9, 2010 / 4:26 pm

Didn’t Massively just run an article on defining what an MMO is?🙂

  5. Malfean September 9, 2010 / 4:34 pm

RMT – Real Money Trade, ie buying gold
NGE – New Game Enhancements, aka Sony destroying Star Wars Galaxies

  6. Mesar September 9, 2010 / 4:45 pm

So should we expect tomorrow’s post to cover the travesty of Trammel and how the carebears “ruined” online gaming?

  7. Julie Whitefeather September 9, 2010 / 4:52 pm

I promise never to discuss any of these on our website or the No Prisoners, No Mercy show if you do. Deal?

  8. rowan September 9, 2010 / 4:52 pm

    Thanks, Malfean.🙂

  9. Malcolm September 9, 2010 / 4:58 pm

It’s like you’ve been on the Rift forums lately.

  10. ron September 9, 2010 / 5:14 pm

yes some of those topics are really recurrent, and some not, or maybe I’m not reading enough😉

  11. Utakata September 9, 2010 / 5:17 pm

…you forgot Derek Smart squabbling with David Allen, Syp. : )

  12. Sinborn September 9, 2010 / 5:46 pm

If you can’t necro a thread, you can’t necro the dead.

    Word.

All PvP’ers are psychopathic bullies who pull wings off flies and set fire to kittens / all non-PvP’ers are stupid carebears who should go and play The Sims.

  14. Thomas September 9, 2010 / 6:25 pm

Since when do girls play games? My kin leader in LOTRO & guild leader in WOW are so not girls.😉

  15. Victor Stillwater September 9, 2010 / 6:53 pm

Someone should make a blogpost that touches on each of those points.

    Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

  16. Yogi September 9, 2010 / 7:53 pm

You missed the most obvious, MMOs! So tired of MMO Blogs rehashing new posts about MMOs.

  17. Rog September 10, 2010 / 12:45 am

But, but, but– what would we need MMO blogs for then?

    =P

    Note: I’m not disagreeing.

Is easy! MMORPG = Many Men Online Roleplaying Girls!

  19. Boris September 10, 2010 / 7:21 am

I do think there is one more you are missing, the “playing alone together” phenomenon and it’s lovers and haters. Excellent list.

  20. Boris September 10, 2010 / 7:25 am

And… you give it mention in your next post. Doh!

  21. spinks September 10, 2010 / 11:29 am

You haven’t mentioned Euro vs US wars! To the blogmobile!

  22. Tremayne September 10, 2010 / 1:25 pm

Open free for all PvP: because the advocates of this apparently enjoy being ganked at any moment and so should you!

  23. Wilhelm2451 September 10, 2010 / 9:44 pm

I think according to blogger’s union bylaws, you’re allowed to go after any three of those topics (or the additional suggestions) without facing a review by the board, and that you may further address any of those topics once under the guise of making your position on them known.

After that, you may only delve into any of those topics if you are either responding to somebody elses post on that subject and you’ve strayed beyond the reasonable length of a comment or you have a close, personal, and obvious to all reason for rehashing a given topic.

And that last one can have you up in front of the review committee unless you can document your reasoning.

  24. Dblade September 11, 2010 / 6:53 am

Hah, doesn’t stop you guys at massively from bringing one of those topics up when it’s a slow news day, huh? For dead horses they generate a lot of traffic.

    “Girls play MMORPGs? What?”
    – Girl = female/women or…
Any big deal on that? I’m one of those females who have the passion of online gaming.

Whether we like it or not, those topics will go on and on as long as MMO is here.

    “Girls play MMORPGs? What?”
    – Girl = female/women or…
GIRL = Guys In Real Life?
Anyhow, does this really matter? Any big deal on this? I’m one of those females who have the passion of playing mmorpgs, and I do enjoy playing ’em.

And… whether we like it or not, these topics will go on and on as long as MMO is here. The MMO life it is…
